We can buy Holstein bull calves around the area for about a 125 each. Has any one ever grown one out for meat, I would appreciate your experience

16 months most likely. If you have pasture? After the first few months of feeding grain and milk abundant pasture would be your feed. Holsteins make big steers to fatten. Some people without pasture , only a dry lot rack up a bill of $5 or more per day in feed and hay. I have raised many Holstein calves but not for our freezer, I do know people who bought calves and fed them for the freezer.

I've never raised Holsteins, but I've raised quite a few Guernseys for that purpose (or to be more accurate, helped my dad). We'd buy them just a few days old, bottle feed them at first, then transition to sweet feed and then to pasture and a bit of sweet feed or corn. I don't think we ever let them get past 12 months before slaughter.
The meat wasn't Angus heavy beef, but was good.
