OMG that video of Skunkie is so pathetic ... Numb had hotwired off part of the paddock while he was doing some work in there. When he took the wire down a couple days later, all the other girls rushed in to eat the grass and weeds that had grown up in there, but Skunkie was too timid to go through the opening where the hotwire had been.
Numb said she eventually went down the lane and came up through the entrance at the end.

Wow, willowgirl and comfortablynumb, Skunkie does indeed have beautiful markings on that unforgettable face. Hey, I was just wondering what the girls are eating out of the buckets. It didn't come off near as fine as what our former dairy farmer friend used to feed his girls - what he called - ground feed. You guys definitely/obviously have big hearts for these large lovely ladies. I totally commend ya'll and wish I had some neighbors like you guys! Wanna be my neighbor? Take care youse two! ~Mari

You will have to move to SW PA, Mari! The feed in the buckets is sweet feed, which we give the girls on the weekends when I don't get TMR from the dairy. That video was made back when Lizzie's feet were still sore (you can see how skinny she is in it). She and Lillian were way up on the hill when we fed, so we carried their share of the feed up to them so they wouldn't have to come down the hill. (Lil is old and fat and lazy, lol.) I call that video "Synchronized Eating" because they both keep sticking their noses in their buckets at exactly the same time, lol.

Thanks! Lizzie has turned into an apple monster, too. She gets right up in your face if she thinks you've got apples on your person, lol.
Numb was teasing her the other day by showing her an apple and taking off running. Of course she'd run after him, bucking and kicking! I tried to make a video but by the time I got around to it, she was getting fed up with the game, lol. It was still pretty funny; I'll have to see if I can get Numb to upload it.

That was precious willowgirl... I've watched it like three times now and it never ceases to put a smile on my face. It is so awesome to see Lizzie prancing around like that knowing what kind of shape her hooves were in not that long ago-Aye Carumba! Ya'll take care now! ~Mari By the way willowgirl - you do indeed have a bit of an infectious laugh!

Cindy has morphed into an apple monster, too! Numb found a long stick and used it knock some fruit down from the high branches last night. A good time was had by all, except poor Skunky. She blatts and runs when the apples start raining down from the tree. Hold one under her nose and she'll sniff it with that sad, mournful look that says, "I really don't think I should be eating this." Skunky is really a dim bulb! The odd part is that she seems to attached herself to Georgia, who is the smartest and most adventurous cow in the herd. She's always the first to check out any situation or new thing ... with timid Skunky trailing in her wake. It's funny how cows pair off this way. Shady and Roz look almost exactly alike, and they're always side-by-side -- Numb calls them "the twins" although they're not really related.

The only apples left now are at the tippy-top of the tree where we can't even reach with a long-handled broom. So we failed in our mission of knocking them down today, and had a bunch of angry ladies milling around demanding to speak to the manager, lol.

This gnarly old tree is so overgrown and has so many suckers that I think it would be nearly impossible to climb! It's huge, too ... one of the biggest apple trees I've ever seen. It probably hasn't been pruned in decades (if it ever was ... it was probably 'planted' via a stray seed dropped by a bird and has been living a life of benign neglect ever since). The apples look and taste like McIntosh ... they're pretty good apples, actually, and the tree has produced boatloads of fruit for two years running. Maybe after it goes dormant, we'll try to clean it up a bit. Here at home, we have a Keiffer pear that bears scads of fruit every year. Most mornings I go out and pick up a bucket of windfalls for Marianne and the goats. When they hear me dump the pears over the gate, they come running!
