My kitchen tea towels just don't seem to get clean. I don't care about stains, but some of them don't smell fresh right out of the drawer, and many get stinky after a couple uses. Using hot water, a different detergent, or bleach isn't helping. Is it just time to retire these to other jobs? Dusting in the cellar maybe, or polishing the car?

I soak my lighter tea towels in oxiclean before washing in hot water. Better, but still dingy looking.

You probably already know this, but just in case you don't, the new washers have changed and it's gov't regulations that the washer doesn't use super hot water, to save on efficiency. It doesn't mean you can't turn up your hot water heater. It doesn't mean you can't boil your cloths on the stove. Laundry detergents have changed and due to phosphates (someone correct me here if this is wrong), aren't used and laundry detergents aren't as cleaning as before. Then add in some laundry stink smell, to cover for lousy detergent, and it's just inefficient to use laundry detergent with new washers. Whites suffer the most. I wash my load of tea towels (I have a lot I use, about 45 of them), in the hottest water possible, then add some laundry soap, and some bleach. Add some dishwasher detergent, it has more whitening ingredients in it (citric acid). There's no hot water rinse unless I do that by hand in the middle of the cycle. Add vinegar to that cycle, then spin it out. Hang on the line to completely dry. It works for me, it may or may not work for you. I've also boiled the cloths on the stove, then hang to dry outside. And weirdly enough, I do use these sanitized towels on my face after washing my face, and they smell good, the weird part is that I sniff them.

I do like unscented oxi clean. Start with hot water & oxi, let them soak in washer for a while and wash, then I usually wash them one more time w/reg laundry soap or no soap. My son's lt. work shirts get bad looking and this seems to really help them.
