The Old Farmer's Almanac says the Ohio Valley will have slightly warmer than normal temps and above average precipitation.

So does that mean that if the average low in January was 16°, it might only be 18° this year? My point is that slight differences in weather are like slight differences in your mother's meat loaf--fairly insignificant. Yet they have a more significant effect on one's outlook going into winter.

DH and I went to an event outside Gerald MO featuring draft animals--horses, mules and a span of working steers which won't be called oxen for a few more months when they are 4 years old. Those guys were Brown Swiss steers that were HUGE, gentle and gorgeous. The owner said they were a ton each and taller than I am at their withers.
I digress. One of the presenter/vendors was a lady who had a display of opened persimmon seeds. Each seed contains the shape of either a knife, fork or spoon. According to folklore, a knife indicated long cutting cold, a spoon a lot of snow, and a fork a mild winter. She must have had 8-10 seeds opened, the halves lying side by side. Only one pair showed a fork. We plan to lay in more firewood this winter just in case.
Nothing scientific about it, just folklore.

We should revisit this thread next spring to see how accurate Accuweather really is.

My husband would totally agree with you, Cabin Fever. When I ask him what the weather forecast is, he responds with "ask me tomorrow and I'll let you know how today went". Silly man. There is nothing we are going to do about changing the weather, we just deal with whatever comes and try to be prepared for the worst and hope for the best!

I wish my 101 year old neighbor was still here. His father was one of the few first villagers here, who built his home. Zebulon, “Zeb” Could tell every fall by certain signs what the winter would be...bad or good. I remember one of the signs he told me was “ when there are a lot of berries on the Holly trees in fall, it’s going to be a bad winter.” The Holly trees were knocked down when they built the mini McMansion after he passed. 😒 the day they knocked down the old house from the 1800’s and the Holy trees are a forever horrible memory.
When one of my children was in pre school and the other in kindergarten, the weather forecast was for a nor’easter that day. I called Zeb and asked him if I should let the kids go to school and me to work. His answer was a firm NO, it’s going to be a bad one. We all stayed home and thanked Zeb for it. Some children had to be picked up in boats at the pre school to be brought home! The National Guard was here for days. Very frightening.
I go by the squirrels and think when they start early finding their nuts and hide them in their own holes, that It’s going to be an early, very cold winter. I hope I’m wrong and I miss Zeb.

Neat post Woodpecker ... While we were visiting with Sarah at the veggie stand yesterday she brought this up as well. Oh, and the fact that there are many more walnuts than usual -- which we have also noticed. (Must be all of the rain we had early on?). Folks in our little corner of the world definitely think it's going to be a bit of a bad one. Especially since we've all been seeing a lot of these! ~Mari

"Mid winter arctic cold" for us here in northern Wisconsin. Shocking. That's fine, though. I remember predictions of a "warmer, milder winter." That year was an absolute beast. Just like the hotter and drier than normal August that was originally forecast for this year. Turned out wetter and much colder than normal. I agree with Cabin Fever, let's revist this in the spring!

I don't believe that I've ever seen one. The one's I've seen over the years have at least some rust color in the middle. You are going to have a severe winter!

Coming home the other day there were 5 wooly bears on the road in a short section. Four were black with orange underneath. The other had a narrow orange band. I had never seen any like the first four before this.

Local weather guy gave his prediction. Slightly above normal precipitation (snow) and slight below normal temps. Last 3 or 4 years have been above normal temps and below on snow....so he said it will feel worse then it really will be, lol.
Was talking with our financial advisor yesterday. He's British. He said the weather forecasts in Europe and Britian are spot on.....always, but never right here in the US. He asked some high end weather guys why. Europe uses more data when making predictions then the US does. I found that interesting. Never watched the weather when we live in Europe, didn't speak the language well enough to understand it, lol. Now I wish I had.

I wonder how the weather people can forecast what the weather will be over a season when they can't get tomorrow morning right.
