Oldest son's girlfriend just called me. Her horse Ransom, a Clydesdale, is undergoing emergency surgery right now. He has developed an abcess in his coffin bone. The vet said he may not make it. Please send all the prayers and positive energy that you can. This girl lives for her horse and my heart is breaking for both of them. I can't stop crying. He is the sweetest, gentle giant you could ever imagine. Thankfully, they have the money to give him a chance. But in this instance, it may not make a difference.
Please pray for Ransom and Kasey!

The latest ... Ransom did not have surgery yesterday. They decided after taking more x-rays, that the vet made 5 large holes in the sole of his hoof and physically scooped out a lot of the infection. They have him on IV antibiotics and pain meds so he is still at the trauma center and will be for a few more days at least. Over the next few days they will assess the situation and decide if they are going to go ahead with the surgery. At this point he will be out of commission for 8-12 weeks and if they have to do the surgery and he survives, it will be more like a year or more. He is having a hard time being in a stall all the time, but I feel better that he has round the clock vet care right now. And the vet told Kasey that there is no way she could have known that this was happening, and that it wasn't just a normal abcess. I'm glad he said that because the poor kid was blaming herself.
Thanks for the prayers and I'll update you as we go.

Ransom is home. They ended up doing surgery but instead of knocking him out, the used a nerve block. They didn't want to risk him hurting himself when coming out of anesthesia. He is doing well, wearing a special shoe with a removable plate that completely covers his now completely open and exposed coffin bone. The shoe is a work of art! He is still on antibiotics and stall rest, for at least another 8-10 weeks. He is not a happy camper being stuck inside and is becoming a handful to handle. He is on a mild sedative so Kasey can work with his hoof, soaking it daily and rewrapping it. It's still too early to say that he's out of the woods but things look promising. At this rate the vet says he will be out of commission for 12 months, but he's a young horse.
Hopefully Ransom and Kasey have many more miles of trails ahead of them!
Thank you all for the prayers!

I like a proactive vet. Praying Ransom will make a complete recovery and will be able to get back to work.
Hooves are so difficult, I've had my fair share of issues over the years with some of my horses. Right now we are battling a canker in one of my mares hooves. We have cut and cut and cut to get it all removed, and it just won't stop coming back. I think it gets more and more angry every time we work on her, but without what we are doing I would have to put her down, and I'm not ready to concede defeat at this time. My vet isn't ready to stop yet either, and I know she will tell me when she's done treating the hoof and it's time to let my girl go. But we aren't there yet...

Just wanted to give you a Ransom update ....
Ransom is doing well. He was just given the okay to get turned out in the round pen when the weather is dry for about 20 minutes a day. It's not much but it's a step in the right direction. He is still wearing a special shoe with a removable plate that Kasey cleans daily but he doesn't need to have his hoof soaked anymore, just wrapped over the plate, thank goodness. He wasn't very happy or cooperative with the soaking! He loves being back outside! Previously there was another horse whose stall was across the aisle from Ransom's who was also on stall rest but he was moved to a rehab facility right after Thanksgiving, so poor Ransom was kind of lonely while everyone else was outside.
Thanks for the good thoughts and prayers everyone!
