I went online looking for seeds from a couple of the better known seed catalog companies (I don't know if I'm allowed to state their names) and found a lot of the seeds I want are "out of stock" mostly beans, cukes, squash and the likes. I wonder if there has been a rush on these as there was TP at the stores? Is any one finding what they need? I hate to go into town right now, Ive been doing really well sheltering and all the folks from down state (Detroit and round about) are up here opening their cabins

Ordered early, but noticed at Tractor Supply today some of their seed rack were empty. Did not check to see what was left.

It makes sense that people who have never gardened before are going to start this year. They are home and have nothing to do, they have to make the best of their situation. So shortages will occur (and I'm guessing nation wide).
We planted about 50 extra tomato plants (or more), and if they all do well after transplanting to larger containers, we might make those available to the neighbors. When the stores have transplants, be quick about getting them if you buy yours.
We started our seeds early (winter sown and indoor seed starting), ordered early too. Good luck if you are looking for seeds at the stores.
In terms of extra seed, we have san marzano, redorta, and paquebot roma, if you need any pm me.

Sorry I was actually out seeding my seed trays. So glad you found what you wanted. Seeds from Italy is also an excellent source. I've had great success with their product

Baker Creek and MI Gardener were out of a lot when I was on their sites last week. The same thing happened that happened with the toilet paper. The media started showing pics of Vermont not allowing people to buy seeds in Vermont and everyone made a mad dash. I've been told that the same thing is happening with baby chicks, too.

We are planning a trip to town tomorrow. It has been three weeks since we were in our small town. Population maybe 3000. We are in the process of installing a whole house generator. We had it ordered before the corona virus had started in the US. It took awhile, but we got it. It is now on its permanent foundation and our electrician says he will work us in, yo get the wiring installed, but to test it, we will need a backup battery and two quarts of specialty oil. So while DH is getting generator supplies and also checking on seed potatoes at the feed store. Also picking up two more bags of chicken feed. I will hit the grocery store for milk, ice cream, cheese, coffee creamer and bananas.
DH always has a few N95 masks in the shop for woodworking, so we will be wearing them while we are in town.
We each have a list. The logistics of planning this trip is just exhausting.

ketoriverfarm, Must be headed to Colville for your shopping trip. One of my very favorite towns. Do they have the gates shut at the Laurier border crossing? Have a safe trip.

farmchix - I found Baker creek fast enough but on their home page this is what I was greeted with-"Due to an unprecedented increase in order volume our website and farm are temporarily closed to restock inventory and disinfect our workspace" So I guess the rush is still on

I got a notification. I hope all these people who are ordering seeds now don't think they germinate with toilet paper! LOL Here's hoping they are up for the task!

farmerjack, the Laurier border is closed except for essential traffic. Such as chip trucks and freight trucks. We do shop In Colville. Have not headed to town yet.

I was curious, so I looked at a couple favorite seed suppliers. Both are on the $$ side, lots of interesting and esoteric items. I've only ordered from them periodically. Lots of things at Renee's Garden are sold out; Johnny's of Maine is only shipping to commercial farmers until 4/14.

Figured it would be possible pretty slow up there. Part of my job, when was with the state patrol, in conjunction with the ag dept, was to check paperwork on livestock coming in from Canada. Stopped there one day and told the folks what I was doing. They laughed and said not many cross here. The only ones that did belonged to someone in Canada that free ranged their cattle, pigs and chickens. They said these would wonder across into the U S everyday and wonder back at night. Of course the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

farmchix, this is kind'a reminiscent of y2k- I think it was 2002-03 I started seeing generators, survival buckets, mre's on craigs listed for dirt cheap prices, probably won't see tp on there but I wonder what the fall out will be.

I love the news articles that are popping up now with people trying to return all the TP in an effort to pay their rent. No one is taking returns right now.... We haven't bought TP for months so there would be some for everyone else. Canning jars, lids....all have a run on them right now.

So many new people rushed into the garden and chicken programs. Many of the seeds sold will not be planted nor saved. By mid summer chickens will be listed for free on craigslist.

On the flip side of the seed shortage...I couldn't find the time to start my own seeds this year. Its not the first time - so the backup plan was to support my local mom & pop nursery who always seem to have what i need and the plants are always top notch & at a reasonable price ($10 per 48 plant flat). I consider this particular nursery as one of, if not the best in our area. Its a husband/wife operation that usually employs 6-8 full timers this time of year (that they depend on) to up plant the various starts from 288 1/2” cells into 4 or 6 cell packs that they sell by the pack or flat. They have 6 -100’ long greenhouses, all loaded to the hilt with various vegetables, herbs and flowers that they started right about the time this virus showed up. As of yesterday, the plants i looked at were all strong with thick stems but were beginning to become root bound in those small cells. Due to the pandemic, they have NO help this year and time has about ran out to get them up-planted before they become root bound and useless
On the flip side of that sad story (from what I'm seeing here), the big box stores selling bonnie plants etc...and the nurseries that have managed to build a big inventory of plants for sale are getting a premium over normal prices.

We volunteered at the local mission today. A lady who is a school teacher donated about 100 tomato plants today. They we supposed to be for a school project. To my great pleasure there were a few folks who were thrilled to get some plants. Six leftover so they are going in my garden tomorrow. Our nearest Mom and Pop nursery is high. Paid 2.49 for garden plants I only got 4.
