Grubs

Last year, the most likely blame for my vegetable garden failure was a lot of beatles and grubs. I could see the potatoes were worn out as if they'd been troubled by insects when I dug them up. And grubs eating the roots would explain some other plants having troubles too.
This year, planting the potatoes and tomatoes, I can see there are grubs being dug up in the ground. Since I'm already planting the veggie garden, it's a bit late to treat with an insecticide I can't use in a garden of edibles.
So far all i can find to treat grub infestations are nematodes which are supposed to kill the grubs if they survive shipping. I will likely order those today. Anyone have these work out?
Any other treatment suggestions folks?
