I like the look and the color of grape hyacinths, but they are trying to take over! I've removed any I see crowding other bulb flowers and perennials. I may leave a few in particular spots, but cut the blooms off before they seed. I know that won't eradicate them. Right now I'm OK with that.
The question: can I put the little bulbs in my compost, or is it better to put them in the trash? I don't want to spread them back all over the place when I break down the compost bins. Thanks!

They might grow in the compost. I would put them elsewhere.
Funny story- There is a lady who lives a few miles from me who had a beautiful yard. She has all sorts of flowers growing but she likes a fairly formal look so she keeps everything under control. There is a solid board fence all the way around her yard but they own more land behind the fence. Over many years she has thrown old plants that she doesn't want or plants she thinned out, or the tops of plants from deadheading etc... over the fence. The back of the fence is a wild mix of all sorts of plants that grow everywhere. I told her that side of the fence was my style. lol

Think Melissa is correct. Not sure you can kill them. When I thin the patch, they go to the county recycling place. I go in with a grub how and try to thin, but in another year they are back again. One bulb must multiply like rabbits.

Use less you are so lucky in my opinion that your grape hyacinth are spreading. I wish mine would .I have to buy new ones every year since they don't come back . I even try different areas.

oma2-3, I wonder why that is. Do yours set seeds? A while back, I asked about how to get my trumpet vine to multiply, and had some people take me task, since those are very invasive in some areas. My mom took seeds from a trumpet growing wild on the now-vacant land that at one time was a family homestead in central PA. I had just the one giant one she planted behind the house.

Use Less, If you let me know how much it would cost to ship them to me, I'll take them off your hands! I love them and don't mind if they get invasive.
