I'd like to make me a feather pillow right about now... Oh My Word - I can see it in my mind's eye bluemingidiot , it's been years. That black/brown striped, tarp-like material pillow case thingy. My Grandma had a bunch of those - hadn't thought about that for soooo long. Thanks for stirring up some lovely memories. ETA - Also got to thinking about those down pillows she had - just about swallowed your head whole!

I always heard my grandmother calling it "tick" or "ticking."
Remember John Denver's "Grandma's Feather Bed?" There was a line about its using a whole bolt of cloth for the tick.

I have 2 overstuffed down pillows that came down through the family. Best thing I inherited.

I have always slept on a feather bed. Nice and light to move and cool in summer, warm in winter. My first one was one my Grandma made. Sweetie and I made a new one years ago. Takes a lot of goose down, even using the best from the old mattress, just for our 3/4 size, 48" wide bed. We kept adding more down for years. Ate a lot of Canadian geese that winter. The finer the down the more comfortable the bed. Our pillows are small, about 10"x16" and each took the down of 6 geese....James

Ticking! Now I remember but I don't think I would have thought of it on my own.
James you are such a treasure trove. Most of us have been seduced by cheaper manufacturing and advertising.

Oh what I would give for a feather bed..... @jwal10, that must be so comfy. I’ve purchased feather “ toppers” for my bed. I had it on top of a rather old mattress...it was very comfy, but after a few years the feathers weren’t as thick or fluffy, no matter how I tried to fluff them up.

I love my feather pillow but it does lose it's fluff after a while. For that issue I also have a sacrificial feather pillow that I will pull some feathers from to plump my good one back up.
