These are hive inspections of walk-away splits I did about 6 weeks ago (also trying out a new camera). It's more for my record keeping then informational but i thought I would share it anyway.

I am fascinated by beekeeping. We have a friend who has about 20 hives. The honey is so good.

susannah, Melissa, Thanks ! I love me, my bees. Around here Nuc's go for $150 each. Selling Nuc's is part of my retirement plan. The first Gal I bought from has 55+ hives, 2 Nuc's per hive is $16,000+. Not a bad income for so little work. And your right the honey is so YUMMMMMY!

My DD, in Maryland started keeping bees 4 or 5 years and has been having great success. Love it when she brings some to me. Although we live 1200 miles from her. I realize honey from closer to my home would be more therapeutic for us.
She is quite the determined individual! I’m proud of her!

Unlike honey, selling nuc's is not regulated! My two-year goal is to have at minimum 20 hives. Tallpines, Very nice about your daughter. Bees are a great hobby/venture.

Around here Nuc's go for $150 each. The first Gal I bought from has 55+ hives, 2 Nuc's per hive is $16,000+. Not a bad income for so little work. There are an awful lot of assumptions in your math! According to the National Honey Bee Colony Loss Survey covering April 2019 to April 2020, U.S. beekeepers lost 44% of their colonies in that span. So, on average, someone with 55 hives would have lost 24 of them over the course of last year. Of the 31 remaining, how many would be strong enough coming out of winter to make two nucs? Let's be optimistic and say 20, so that means 40 nucs. But if the beekeeper wants to stay at 55 hives, that mean there are only 16 to sell, since 24 of them are needed to replace the dead-outs. Instead of $16,000, you're looking at $2400. Quite a difference. We need more folks who are able to produce & sell nucs, so I wish you well, but don't count on it being good money for "so little work"!

indypartridge , Thank you for all the support and killing the dream! Not my intent to kill anyone's dream, but is my intent to point out expectations that are fantasy. Can you have a sideline income from 55 hives? Yes. Is it going to be in anywhere near $16k? No. Since you're in Michigan, you might check out Mel Disselkoen's techniques at www.mdasplitter.com/I've attended a few of his talks over the years, and have raised queens using his On-the-Spot (OTS) method. He has a number of good methods for making splits as well as raising your own queens.

indypartridge, Dream Killer Since you don't know me or what I can do...please keep your killer thoughts to yourself. For every dreamer, there is someone like you telling me I CAN'T do it. I know what I have seen in regards to income from 3 different people splitting NUC's . If it is a fantasy it's mine and I will live it no matter what people like you say. My mom always said if you can't be supportive keep quit!

indypartridge , I apologize for my rant. statistics are a funny thing is not quite what the 2019-2020 National Honey Bee Colony Loss Survey stated Of the total number of hives that were registered 44% were lost, the flipside of that is 66% survive. And I guarantee you that some beekeepers lost everything and other beekeepers lost nothing. Now to I expect losses absolutely, do I expect to lose 44% of my hives every year absolutely not

A little optimism is vital for most dreams! And if you are having fun, learning, and making some extra money those are all good things too~
