Redfish, I use "Irfanview". It's a free program and a GREAT graphic viewer. You can modify your pics, resize, change color intensity, crop, sharpen, etc. I've been using it for years with no problems. And it's FREE!!! :-) www.irfanview.com/main_download_engl.htmMy camera take pics at about 3 mb. I open them with Irfanview and resize to about 700kb, then save them. You can go as small as you like. I upload right from my comp. LOVE the kitty bed!

I haven't done any but I want to. How do you do the denim ones? All the denim I have are from old jeans and there aren't any long strips really. By the way, I love your rugs. For the twined and toothbrush rugs, I cut little slits in the ends of the strips and join them together that way as needed. For the braided rugs, I sew the ends together diagaonally. I can do pics if you really want to know and need more explanation. I have wanted to do them, too. I prefer these to any store bought rugs. If I had room for a loom......

Everyone's rugs are just gorgeous! You are all so talented.
Making rugs is on my list of things to do as life slows down (does it ever??? lol) and kids get older and move out...

Cool Redfish! Did you try Irfanview? Farmchix, My homemade loom is 2'w x 4'h , can stand against a wall and is about 4 inches deep. But I put a set of feet on mine so it stands up and flips over. It really doesn't take up much room. It could store behind a door. I think I want to make mine adjustable.....next project!

Yes, I did! farmchix, I agree with @osiris, the twined looms are easy to store. Mine is hanging on the wall out in the woodshed. My placemat size one tucks up under a folding table covered with plants at the window. They take up less room than my denim stash does. I almost bought one back when we had the llamas. Another one of the Moms bought it and I was a little *ouchy* about it, so I never looked into it. As much as I love the rugs, I should have. I remember when I had my shop and Thimbleberries came out with them to coordinate with their fabrics. A smaller one (maybe 5'x7') was over $300.

Latest on the loom. The fuzzy synthetic blanket material makes a really soft rug. Attachments:

Do you pack that super tight, or leave it a little loose?

Do you pack that super tight, or leave it a little loose? I pack it tight. I go after each row and push it up with a tool I made. I call it a 'weft lifter'! LOL It's just a piece of steel that happens to have a 1/4 inch radius cut in it. I just push up on the braids. Works well. Easy enough to make. Even out of wood!

Redfish - I go to goodwill stores.(and garage sales) Look for those cheap throws - the soft fuzzy ones. The crazier the pattern the better too. They usually run about 6.99 and you can get a lot of strips out of one. Some of this 'blanket' stuff is actually a lot closer to just a fuzzy tshirt yarn. It stretches a lot. But they do make nice twined rugs.

You're right Red. I do use the rotary cutter and it works very well. My mind always wants to improve on something! LOL I was actually thinking... paper shredder? Hmmm remove some of the wheels and put in spacers... NOPE! Hey I just want to upload a pic of my loom in case anyone wants to know how to make one. Very simple. I did feet on mine so I can spin it over to work from both sides. You're supposed to work in sections toward the middle. I used 3/8 steel rods, but 1/4 inch or 5/16 would be plenty strong enough. All pine wood 2x4's and dowel pins (spaced an inch apart).... You get the idea. A couple hours of thinking/tinkering and you got a loom for generations! I'm going to add an removable upright and crossbar to make it smaller 18" x 24". ....one of these days.;-)

I started my first rag rug last night, we are taking out the carpet in our main floor to expose the old oak floors and I wanted a rug for the hall. Got 16 t-shirts in 4 colors at half off day at the Salvation Army yesterday, cut them up and taught myself to crochet. I'll post a pic when I finish it. I think I like it, though I should have switched colors at the row ends not just kept going with each til the fabric ran out, the partial rows may drive me crazy...I'm not OCD I'm detail oriented...yeah. I hope it ends up big enough. The crocheting part is easy the cutting gets old fast, but someone hid my good sewing scissors that could be why.

Well I've got a couple finished on that Weavers delight loom. But they're wound up on the cloth roll. I've got another finished on the twining loom. But, it seems I can't upload pics from the computer any more. The 'insert image' button only gives me the option of a 'url link'. It gives me no browse button to upload it from the comp. No pics, sorry

Redfish, have you ever dyed or bleached the denim to get different colors to play with? If so, how did those come out

Redfish, I feel you there. We're trying to move out of our far-too-small house right now and I'm packing up all I can. It's hot enough that we're hiding inside most of the day and I'd love to do a project, but I keep telling myself my project is packing! (and then I come on here, lol)
I have a lot of denim I'll eventually use in a couple of projects. DD took home ec and learned how to use a sewing machine and I'm hoping she can teach me enough to make a patchwork quilt, and I definitely want to do some rugs. But, like you, I wanted some colors besides shades of blue and was hoping you might have already experimented and knew how the colors came out.
Whichever of us gets settled first can show the other!

Beautiful rugs everyone! Rug making really appeals to me, which is surprising since I am not crafty or artsy at all. I was recently at a woman's house/shop in Lincolnville Maine who makes and sells rag rugs, she said most of her fabric is given to her, people leave bags of old clothes on her doorstep. Of course in Maine you're going to have a lot more wool shirts and coats!

Gorgeous! I've thought about trying to braid rugs, even have an instruction booklet and some tools. Just never seemed to find enough motivation to attempt it. Maybe I'll find it here!
