Heritage and modern don't have to have a "vs" between them! I've been looking for some just-right gilts to get back into pigs with and finally found some! These 2 pretty gilts are a cross between GOS and "york" (aka big, white, commercial type pig) and just what I wanted. They'll grow a lot faster and more feed efficiently than the heritage breed and put on more lard and have more marbling than the modern. And they're pretty My Grandma always said to never pick anything - from houses to husbands - based on how they look, but also to keep in mind if you're going to be seeing something every day it ought to be easy on the eyes along with it's other attributes. The seller had a purebred, lightly related GOS boar piglet, but I'll wait and see how these grow. It takes some hunting but you can find GOS semen for sale for if the girls grow up tending toward the leaner side of the family. And if they grow up more like lard pigs, we'll AI them to a bacon breed. I have missed breeding pigs. We are planning on moving to an area where good pasture pigs are in much higher demand than here, so hopefully these girls will be a valuable addition to the farm family for a long time to come.
