Dunno what a backpack vacuum is.
I use a regular vacuum, then if it's dirty, I go over it with spray of Murphy's Oil Soap & damp mop. When I first moved in, I used hot water, Murphy's Oil Soap with a brush on my knees, making sure to get as much of the water up as possible.
I picked up an inexpensive lightweight electric broom for daily use to pick up dog hair. Doesn't work on carpets, but my old house is almost all beautiful old oak flooring with scatter rugs.

in our old house that had hardwood throughout, i wasted so much money trying to make cleaning it easier....through it all i found out an old fashioned sweeping with a regular broom got it all up and then when needed i just used a old cotton rag mop with Murphy's oil soap. nothing made that floor shine like Murphy's did

Do you mean gas powered? Never liked a vacuum, noisy and just seems to blow the dust around. I just use a swiffer mop head with homemade pads. First one gets a spray of mix (below) to keep the dust down, second is wet pad. Once a week I use Murphy's oil soap and warm water, same pads....James happymoneysaver.com/make-swiffer-wet-pads/

I think I might have found one.... www.mscdirect.com/product/details/46823241James, they are plug in electric, some of the head attachments have felt on them so they don't scratch hardwood floors, I have four inside little dogs but with the hair they shed you'd think there was 20 of them inside, we have sandy and red clay soil here and I really need to get sand up and out of floors so it doesn't harm the hardwood, so a vacuum to me is a must have, but I like your idea for cleaning wood when washing floor down.

We've been using a backpack vacuum on our wood floors for 13 years now. When she has it on, my wife looks like she just came off the set of "Ghostbusters!" It's very powerful and convenient. You're not dragging a big o' canister around that runs into walls and gets stuck around funiture. And, you don't have a huge powerhead that doesn't get underneath beds, tables, and furniture. And, you can wear it climbing a ladder or standing on a chair to get high places like the top of cupboards and celing fans. The model we have isn't made anymore, but it is a commercial model made by Pro-Team. Pro-Team makes about 10 different models of backpack vacuums ==> www.pro-team.com/vacuums/default.aspx?style=1

You know that commercial on t.v. let go of my eggo? don't tough my eggo? DON'T TOUCH MY VACUUM, it is built really comfortable, you really don't even notice that it is there (you might if you had a really bad back) but if your back is good or okay this is the sheeeeeeeeeeets vacuum, and what is so sweet is not getting vacuum out for carpet and not getting broom out for linoleum, no dust mop for hardwood......this thing does it ALL and in so few MINUTES, I went from throw rugs to hardwood and onto linoleum without switching TOOLS...suction on this model is really good as well.
