i thoroughly enjoy going to the barn twice a day to feed, water and just check on my animals. I have three separate configurations of sheep right now. And I also have chickens. Right after breakfast I go out and fill hay troughs, often getting hay bales down from the stack. Topping off water troughs, checking salt and mineral levels. I open the gates to let the ram and ewes out into the pasture. Let the chickens out into the garden. I talk to everyone and just do an overall wellness check. Evenings (just before dark) I give the chickens their scratch; they come running as soon as I start calling. The ram and ewes wait at the gate. I give them some COB and /or range cubes in tubs in the loafing area and when I open the gate they come charging in. i was thinking tonight as I walked back into the house through a dusting of snow, how fortunate I feel and things are just fine in my neck of the woods.

I enjoy all of it when the weather is nice, but when its snowing and or raining and I am out in the elements filling water or breaking ice, ect and the sheep are standing under the shelter looking at me like they are saying those humans don't have a lick of sense about them as they are standing out in said down poor
I think there are times my sheep are smarter then I

I feel good when I know the sheep, chooks and pig are all fed and settled. It's not a chore for me. Now weeding and cleaning... that's quite another story, LOL.

I love the leisurely time in the Spring through Fall. Hearing the birds and warching wildlife. Admiring the trees and the sky. Looking at the flowers. But come winter it's slogging through the mud, or trying to keep upright on the ice. Trying to pry frozen piles of various animal depisits off ground in the paddocks. That reminds me- I better dig out the rain suit. Hopefully it will be a rainy winter. We need it.

I was thinking about this post I did when the weather was much better. When I went out this morning to the barn it was 12 degrees with a slight breeze. I still enjoy getting out and having chores make me get outside even when I do not want to go. It just takes longer to get things done. And of course more things seem to go wrong when the weather is bad. Since I grew up on a farm, I know that is just the nature of having a farm. There is always something to repair, a sick or injured critter, and the list goes on. Right now the sun is shining. There is five inches of snow on the ground. And the temperature is up to 21 degrees. I am inside having a cup of tea before heading back out. All of my outside watering troughs are not frozen. I have a heat lamp on for the chickens. Just need to get hay down for feeding tonight and an extra bale or two of straw spread for the sheep. I do enjoy living on a farm!

I am fortunate enough to be able to do my chores totally inside in the winter. I move the chickens out of their coop and into a stall in the barn. The alpacas come and go as they please anyway. The borrowed sheep are just a step away. I do like standing around talking to everyone- exept the annoying cat that has to be in the middle of everything I do. I like to think that they enjoy it too. I don't always have the time to dally but when I do, I do it well.
