I was hoping to make this a poll, but it isn't letting me (antiquated software problem). Maybe a moderator could make it so?
Choose one or more as appropriate, explain why if you wish:
A) If I want it done right, I do it all myself, regardless of the size of the project. B) I enlist proven skilled family or friends to help. C) I enlist proven skilled family or friends to do it for me. D) I enlist anyone who can hold a hammer to help, and teach them as we go. E) I enlist anyone who can hold a hammer to help, and pray they know more than I do. F) "A man has to know his limitations." (Clint Eastwood) - I do what I can and hire out what I can't. G) Any more than 2 measurements, a half dozen nails, or 2' off the ground and I'm looking at Angie's list.

B & C - I enlist DH because he's proven over and over again for the last 30+ years that he can do it all, right down to jacking up the house and replacing rim joists, and the main support beam in our current 125+ yo farm house. I'm willing to help wherever but he's got the super-skills.

Don't know yet what I will be able to do after the ankle surgery. I knew I wouldn't be building any more rentals. I had given up setting trusses, sheathing and roofing a few years ago. I have a niece and nephew that do it for a living, they do it for me. DS can't do heights. I will reevaluate after I am all healed up....James

A and B for me. Next project is a metal roof on the back garage which is extemly steep cedar shingles and almost 40 ft at the peak. I've done plenty of roofs just never such a steep pitch.

Being as I made the poll, it's only fair I answer. I'm blessed that it's mostly A, simply because for most things, darn few can do it better, or safer, or more efficiently; be that making sawdust and whacking nails, or running wire or pipe, or moving dirt by the shovelful, or plow full (or 3 yard bucket full), or making metal parts into various shapes as need be to keep obsolete machinery working, or improve it. I'm not afraid to dig into something to if at all possible figure out how it works, and often enough, make it work on my own. Next would be D. I'd rather teach someone how to do something my way than fight with someone who thinks they know how to do something better than I do (and often don't, because I've BTDT and learned better). www.amazon.com/WARNING-Avoid-Injury-vinyl-sticker/dp/B00M3F6PWMBeyond that, F. Yes, I have a pretty good idea of my limits, and I do refer to experts for some things, like tig welding (done it, but don't have the equipment and not "proficient" at it for fussy stuff). But I'll want to watch, and if possible ask a gajillion questions and learn how it's done, so I have a better chance of doing it myself next time.

We do let the sons know what we are working on, because they want to learn all that we know about DIY. If they are available, they usually come and we use it as a 'training opportunity with muscles'. If it is something I can do myself, I just jump in there and do it. If I think Hubs will get mad that I didn't ask, I will involve him. I was raised to be independent, but when I married Hubs, he took away my toolbox. He said that was "his job". With all that there is to get done around here, I think he would gladly give it back! LOL

I guess I'd have to choose B & F. My DBF & I do most of the building around here ourselves, but, I have hired a guy I know to build a fence for me when my DBF was on the road (he's an OTR truck driver) & I needed a fence modified for my goats.

We usually dive in and do it ourselves....don't know how civilization made it as far as it did without YouTube videos. LOL!

You didn't have my catagory. It's the "I can't afford to have someone do it, I'm pretty logical, I'm not building the Taj Mahal, and I'll forgive my mistakes because, for Pete's sake, I've certainly forgiven other people's. "

Those, depending on what it is, the roof needs replacing, waiting on some better weather, now his family have done roofs before so they're comming to help/teach. But I also have a friend comming who is just there for some extra brawn.
