The two sets of Trips have now all gotten their colostrum from their mums, So last night I took one lamb from both groups of trips and will bucket raise them, As I said before we don't let the ewes raise the trips....Most of the bucket raised boys will be put up on CL and sold as bottle babies, the girls will stay!

10 girls 9 boys Okay, now the boy girl ratio seems normal. I just have 5 ewes bred this year. Thanks for the pictures. Love lambs!

Lovely photos - thanks shellymay. Baby anything's are so cute, but seeing lambs pronking around in the paddock at sunset and holding mock races with each other makes my heart melt. Man, those mums are bagging up big, aren't they? They remind me of rubber gloves blown up.

@kiwifarmgal, I will get more pictures this weekend, working full time job and raising livestock keeps one busy enough without adding in BABIES with these kinds of numbers being born each day time runs out on things like picture taking and posting and Kiwifarmgal those ewes with those udders still haven't lambed (thud)! and nothing puts a smile on ones face like the ones you make watching the lamb antics in a big group, just to cute.

Tagged six yesterday but there was more born and do to difficulties we didn't tag balance, Had to put one ewe down as she had an enormous baby and then had a uterine prolapse after/during delivery, she must of had troubles trying to deliver and when this happens she eventually starts to lose all her fluids and baby drying up inside and then her insides stick to the hair of the lamb and although she did get lamb out on her own her insides were stuck to lamb and this caused the uterine prolapse Her lamb was big and was in trouble, shaking, eye twitching, panting breathing heavy and just not well......milked out mums colostrum and when I got home I offered to lamb and she drank it down but had to stop often to breathe....... Had another set of trips yesterday so I have another bucket baby to also deal with at time, had another ewe in trouble as she couldn't get her baby out, caught her up and pulled first baby and kept them in a pen and said if she has another she can now surely get it out on her own, 30 mins later she stood up and out came the second (still born), she cleaned up the first and all was good with it. Another mum was trying to steal babies from other ewes and I noticed tons of goo hanging out her back side, she laid down and up again and down again and couldn't get baby out, I seen hooves and was sure that they were upside down. Dang so we got her up in a pen and did a check see and lamb in great position and hooves are correct (thank goodness) So we helped pull lamb and it is enormous also, sac all yellow and icky but lamb alive and breathing good so put by mums face and checked to see if a second and yup another, so pulled it and its enormous also and in correct position but this one is covered in yellow icky also but alive and well, left mum to clean up and all was good there. Had a first timer yesterday give birth to twins right in front and up against feeders guess where all the other mums want to be when we arrive? ?? So in the confusion this first timer is all confused as to who her babies are, she is head butting one of them and we now have a mess on our hands, so her after birth was laying right there where she had them and I grab it up and wipe it all over both her babies and get the family backed up away from feeders and she then took them both. So we didn't tag these as we felt today would be better after her and babies bond better, and didn't tag any of the ones I mentioned up top because mums still needed to get their babies all cleaned up, so we will add these lambs to todays count! Big baby at home still in trouble breathing getting worse shaking and twitching worse, so I check temp and baby is running 107.7 temp Big time fever, gave baby Bantamine and a dose of LA300, before bed I offered it another bottle and she drank 3 oz , when I went to bed I didn't expect this lamb to survive but at 2:30 am I hear it screaming and I can tell it is a hungry scream and I get up check on it and the baby was standing there HUNGRY and fever gone, no shaking, no twitching So it appears that in the beginning the lambs were small to average size, now it seems the last several ewes are having so much bigger babies and did I tell you all how much I don't like trips and the big milk bag momma in the picture still has NOT had hers We only received a little rain last night as our place is right on the outside edge of this storm, we won't be able to avoid all of it as it will be around for several days but we are lucking on thus far at least the temps are UP

shellymay, thanks for the update. I cannot imagine how exhausted you are. But I send you hugs and wishes for a better day. I have had those days on a smaller scale. Ugh! I just recalculated my lambing dates. I saw three of my ewes bred. So unless they did not take the first time, I know when they will lamb. My shearer is not coming until mar 29th. And I have a ram lamb rooing. Normally Icelandics do not have trouble lambing. But last year a first time ewe had problems. I just like it when I have my lambs on the ground.

ketoriverfarm, Wish I could just fast forward 3 weeks from now and 98% of ours would be done, I so love when everyone is done and you can spend time watching the lambs as they are pretty entertaining We used six different breeding rams and pair them up with a certain amount of ewes and they are placed in 6 different breeding pens, each ewe's ear tag number is recorded in computer and who she was bred to. The date is marked down as to when the rams were put in so we know when the ewes will start lambing out, we mark down the day we pulled rams back out and then all ewes will be put back together in one big group and a clean up ram will be put in with the whole group and the dates that he was put in is marked in computer.
So what date are yours going to start? and naked sheep make me laugh/smile and you will have to post pictures for all of us!

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, Yesterday the big rains finally arrived here (around noon) and I was really worried going to farm after work, we tagged 18 lambs total but 5 were born the day before remember, so subtract 5 from 18 for the newly born and you have 13, BUT 14 lambs were born and I have number 14 at home and not well and I doubt this one will make it so haven't tagged yet! Yesterday brought another 2 SETS of trips and the little one I have at home is from one of the trip sets, she was weak and soaked and head all flopped around mouth ice cold. I am doing what I can but doesn't look good, she had to have a warm bath and heat lamp and tube feedings, she was no better this am but still alive....So had to pick one out of the other set of trips and bring it home also and it is a chocolate little boy, him and all the others were just fine I was expecting much worse with the heavy rains! DH has figured it out that as of right now 1 out of every four ewes is lambing with trips I hope that stops real quick!!!!!!!! So as of right now there is 61 lambs on the ground but the little sick one at home may not make it. There are 34 girls and 27 boys out of the first 32 ewes and over 100 ewes to go, we have had 7 sets of trips thus far but only 6 sets alive because of that first momma of the year having all of hers dead inside her that I pulled, PS she is doing great and is at our other property now because it was the only way to control what she gets to eat as we wanted her milk bags to dry up Chances of rain are slight today , tomorrow brings in more heavy rains

Today DH reseeded our pasture behind the shop. He got it packed in this morning. keeping our fingers crossed that it will come up. Still need to clean out the barns. shellymay , what breed are your sheep? do you dock tails? time to go feed and lock them in for the night.

Mine are Katahdins and they are registered stock and NO the registry says registered Katahdins must have their tails BUT we have a few that are commercial stock and they have their tags docked (we didn't do it seller did) at one time we thought we needed a couple of commercial sheep so we could eat their babies, DUH after we bought a couple we decided we could eat the registered lambs just as well We started with wool sheep when we first got into sheep (we did dock the wool sheeps tails) and after 2 yrs we switched to hair sheep, but to answer your question you don't have to dock tails on Katahdins. Gosh girl sorry about the rain and then followed by snow I hope your weather is turned completely around by the time your ready to lamb. 13 more lambs born today NO TRIPS Yippy and and and the ewe with the giant milk bags finally lambed today ( twin big boys) We caught her up and checked her bags and made sure teats were good to go and all was well!!!!

Way to go bag-girl!!! Those twin boys appetites will sure make her feel a lot more comfortable. Sorry to hear about having to put one of your girls down - never a happy situation.
Took me a while to come to terms with eating our own sheep. I don't make a habit of it as they're all pretty much pets now, but I have 3 rams that I'm going eenie meenie miney mo as to who will be turned into mince and salami. Fortunately for them I've procrastinated over that decision because I have sufficient feed to keep them all separated - but the truth is I'm such a woose.

14 lambs tagged yesterday and two we didn't tag, had two ewes with troubles.....both ewes had heads out and you could tell they had been hanging or in that position for a good while, first ewe had one lamb by her side and her second one was the one that was stuck, caught her up and pulled lamb out (shoulder lock) face of lamb swollen up pretty big but alive but the lamb was going to need some time to get over its ordeal and momma wasn't sure about it....
Second ewe with lamb head out but only head, is the only pure black ewe we have, got her caught up in pen and pulled lamb (one leg back) big single lamb and it was dead (lamb was pure black also) BUT BUT we had a set of twins to a first time mom (mom had the first time stupids) and this ewe didn't like one of her twins so I snatched it up and gave it to the pure black ewe, by the time we left the farm the black ewe was licking it off and nursing it
Sold the first BB last night
Sheep are keeping us REAL busy and I think we are down to around 80 ewes to go
111 babies on the ground!

Yesterday brought us another 13 lambs and NO troubles The big baby that only had is head out of ewe the day before that I had to help pull, he was up and doing well....
I had 9 bottle babies at home as of yesterday, a buyer called wanting them all YIPPY but I had two I just couldn't let go so he took seven and I am currently out of BB's (bottle babies) and that relieves me of a lot of time that I just don't have so I am happy about them being sold, of course we still have somewhere as of yesterday about 72 ewes left to lamb and I am sure more trips or a problem will come up with these remaining and end up with several more BB's, but doesn't look like selling them is going to be a problem
I miss you all on the forum but not a lot of time to post
