Oh gosh, y'all would have a heart attack if you looked in my pantry! It is the epic fail of the house...I need a new pantry in the worst way, a single old rancher built this house...and he must not have cooked or stored much? I don't alphabetize my spices, but when we rebuild our kitchen I am putting in a spice rack and will be doing so then:-)

Yes, I do. A few things that we use regularly live on a niche in the wall next to the stove, but everything else goes in the spice rack in the pantry, and it's alphabetized.

Alphabetize your spices? I will admit to being slightly OCD, but even if I wasn't, I would still keep spices alphabetically. It makes them sooooo much easier to find! I plant them in alphabetical order (south to north, this year). It is easier than trying to make a map of where I've squeezed in what plants.

Hmm, never thought about it. The salt, pepper, onion powder and garlic powder live along the front edge of the cupboard and as long as I can find them I do ok. The rest I search for IF I decide to cook something

Oh no, mine are organised by use. so herbs in one section, spices in another, spices used only for sweets in another. I split them by whole/ground as well. I have larger jars (jamjars) full of ones I use a lot of right by the cooker as well.

yes , mine are alphabetized in a drawer except for a salt, pepper, lemon pepper and smokey paprika. Those are in the cabinet next to the stove for easy reach.

I just had to go and look at our herb/spices inventory. We have a list of 43 which we stock on a regular basis. Some are used almost daily (or at least, on the days we cook), others are used sporadically, and still others are used very rarely.
How else would we find them if we did not keep them alphabetized? Especially since hubby and I both cook.
Having them alphabetized saves us so much time- we'd be searching forever if they were not. We'd probably all starve to death whilst waiting to find the right spices for supper, lol.
Not OCD in this case, at all. Just practical.

Mine are not alphabetized. I have my asian spices together, then my stew/soups spices and herbs together, my sweet and baking spices together, sausage making spices together, spices and herbs for dips and sauces, canning spices, old bay and spice mixtures people/companies have given me, and bouillons, all on a spice rack. Then the herbs and spices in big containers (too big for the spice rack, chili powder, garlic powder, oregano, peppercorns, salt, cayenne pepper, extracts, preservatives for sausage, curry powder, quart of stewing vanilla beans in vodka for extract, candy making oil flavors, smoke flavoring) are all in the cabinet. On the door of the freezer, yeast, frozen ground cilantro, olive oil and chopped garlic, ground celery, ginger/garlic mixed and basil w/oil. Any bulk herbs or spices get packaged and labeled for long term freezer storage on the door of the big freezer. In the basement pantry, bulk garlic, bulk sealed ground garlic, more vanilla beans in vodka for extract and dried powdered vegetable powders.
I KNOW where everything is but if someone else walked into my house to cook, they would be frustrated I'm sure.
My herbs and spices are an investment (can't afford to buy them all at once) and insurance of variety in my meals. There are long histories of herbs and spices as medicinal and a precious trade-able commodity.

I organize mine by use. I can find them all, as long as my dd puts them back where she found them.

When I had mine in metal bins velcroed inside the cabinet door years ago they were. But those bins, while very attractive, were some of the most annoying things to open and use. Now they are in larger spice containers (like Costco style), or parmesan shakers, and organized into 1 of 2 drawers and a cabinet partially by use, partially by size/fit into said drawers and cabinet. But unlike my husband and daughter, I can find most any spice in under 15 seconds lol. They stand there and look clueless.

No - baking spices are in a separate cupboard then cooking spices. Then on shelves based on frequently used vs. infrequently used.

I do! I buy a lot at Sams. I have an extra bottle of some and I put the unopened ones behind some square containers that hold flours and oats. I put a 2 on the front so I don't somehow get ahold of it and open it when I have one open. In cleaning I did find I have 4 sams size cinnamons. I am giving one to my neighbor and one to my daughter. Ha, I just have to work on not over buying.

This thread also begs the question - do you organize bath towels, hand towels, and wash cloths by color? I don't as that would mean I've turned into my Mother!!!

We don't have a specific color - if my mother has 7 different colors, each stacks of towels/wash cloths (not clothes lol) are in the same order.

My towels are all bought at garage sales and GW outlet stores, so they don't have a true theme color. I do have some green, light green and white ones I keep on the bamboo stand in my master bath - they coordinate with the wall and trim colors in there. There are some blue towels in the guest bath (blue walls in there with white cabinets). The rest of the towels, well, I'm happy to have them clean, folded and ready for use!

Colour coord towels? ha ha ha .. *cough* That would involve buying towels, who's got money for that Our bathroom is a fetching shade of dark green, it's tiled foor to ceiling, with dark wood ceiling and sink cupbord, fake gray and blue mosaic tile floor, white toiled and sink and white trim (horrified yet?) towels in this house are only aranged into two piles, human and dog. they come in black, yellow, beige and what was probably once white. Yesterday we picked up a mirror for the bathroom, cost all of $4 for a over 3ft mirror, (it has a white frame) we've been here a year and his whining there was no mirror in the place finaly got fixed.
