Once I move to my homestead, I plan on getting pigs. First the perimeter fence, then the hot wires then the pigs! I have found a breeder of both Mulefoot pigs and American Guinea Hogs. Has anyone raised either breed or a cross of the two breeds? I have previously raised Durocs and Hampshires which are both a lot larger than these breeds. Since I am both short not to mention a bit older, I thought getting pigs that were smaller might make it easier to work with them. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Some heritage breeds take another month or more to hit market size, not all though. Herefords seem to gain faster than Hampshires, we have both. What about a regular pig just butcher it when it is yet smaller and more easily handled?

I was hoping to have a breeding trio instead of starting fresh each spring. That way I know what they've eaten, any health issues and also, they can help dig up areas for future gardens. I may consider standard breeds but since it's just two of us, I was thinking less to freeze at butchering time. Thank you for the ideas, I will update when I finally get my piggies.

What did you decide on? I'm investigating AGH right now. We have 1 acre and neighbors but don't live in town. I'm trying to see if a pair would be feasible.
