Cedar. Don't ever have to worry about bugs. And it lasts forever. Plus very low maintenance. You can seal it if you want to keep the color. But if you want it to grey you can just leave it exposed.

Possum, I see where your coming from. I love cedar siding. We plan on doing true 3/4 in cedar siding on our place. I can see how it would split on the end that was 1/4in. How long was the cedar up for?

Had log siding installed on a renovation project, but it was seamless metal. Lifetime warranty on the finish. Insulated. House was 26x40, $7200 labor and material.

Rock; A fellow I knew in OK rebuilt an old house on his dad's farm. He put up steel sheet siding, just plain standing rib, trimmed out the windows with matching metal and put on a steel roof. I was amazed at just how nice that house looked when he was done. I'm now a fan of steel siding.
He also invested in a planer and some woodworking tools, bought an old house with 60-yeear old pine planking, pulled all the nails, ran it thru his planer and put in new interior walls. He shaped his own trim too--- He was a pretty talented man.

Insulation and tightening up doorways and windows with caulking does more for warmth than the outer layer. Go with the wood if you really want the look.
