I have a slight separation between my house and a room addition that was added 50 years ago. Rain water gets in the basement and some times during a heavy rain a bit of dirt and mud come through on to the basement floor. I tried cauking the crack from the outside a couple years ago but could only dig down about half way (4 feet). Now I am removing paneling from the inside basement walls to try to seal the crack from the inside. What should I use to fill the crack/ separation in the corner of my basement concrete wall? Will cauking keep the water and dirt out?

FWIW I think it'd be better to solve the problem on the outside if you can.. though I can't picture what you're doing. What are you digging down into? Is it possible to add on some extra roofing tiles?

You need to add drainage outside to divert the water before it penetrates the wall
Dig a trench and lay some drain pipes and a plastic barrier. Then you can fill any cracks with mortar and paint with a waterproof concrete sealant.

Drainpipe set in gravel with a layer of permeable fabric will help, but if the soil doesn't slope away from the foundation, nothing will really stop water from getting in.
