I had a Saanen deliver a HUGE buckling today. Thought she was done so brought the baby in. A little while later Rebekah told me she had another small kid. I went out to find another buckling. It was about 1/4 the size of the first one. Deformed and just gross! Eye sockets with no eyeballs. Legs were all twisted and weird. Not sure what happened. I figured maybe the big guy sucked all the nutrients and left this one with nothing to grow on. I had thought of taking a picture, but decided it was too nasty looking.

Interesting isn't it? Two years ago I had an incident. In all my years of raising goats, I've had pretty good results and it was rare that I ever saw any being born. If I was with them watching, they waited til I had to leave for just 5 minutes. When I would return, the babies were out, clean, dry and nursing. Well, a doe I have was giving birth 2 years ago, was seemingly not in any distress, chewing cud, dozing a bit, but wouldn't get farther along in her pushing than the two little hoofs. I did go in and I felt the two hoofs and legs, and what I thought was the nose and head so I just left her alone. After enough time had gone by I did call my vet. I'm so glad I did because once he stuck his hand in and felt around he was really confused buy what was in place. He finally thought he had things lined up and what he helped birth was such a sad little thing. The single baby was alive up until the water broke. But its' sternum hadn't knit together. The organs were just floating, together, but loose. He has seen this in cow births more than a few times but goats, he hadn't seen but one a long time ago. He asked if he could photograph it and I said yes. I thought about taking a picture, but I didn't. It was just such a sad thing. He really couldn't say why it had happened & didn't think it would happen the next breeding. I tell you what, I've only needed to help about three births with a little pulling, and if I had pulled that out, why I would have freaked out, thinking I had damaged the poor thing!!! It was just a single birth and the does first freshening. The vet gave her some antibiotics and more for me to give her the next few days. She did pull through (kind of surprised the vet) and I ended up milking her for almost two years. Dried her off this past September. Glad you had a big healthy buckling Wendy.

It is caused by mosquitoes ( you can avoid if you breed your livestock before or after heavy mosquito season)
Cache Valley virus
Schmallenberg Virus

Wow, that would be awful! Thanks for not sending a photo. Years ago, one of my does was impregnated, we came to think by her own kid, months before he should have been able. There were four, and all were deformed and born dead. Looked a little like pug dogs. We wrapped and froze them immediately, and donated the little bodies to the vet school for study

Yikes. Being so new to goats, if this occurred for me I would definitely be totally stunned. Is the big buckling doing well?

Why would it not have affected both kids?

Does your buck run with the Does? I've had this happen before and I think it was because the doe cycled again and was impregnated twice. The 2nd baby was too small for it to have been so undercooked and from the same heat.

Had similiar thing happen about 10 years ago, both us and our friend about 8 miles away. We thought at the time it must have been something in the hay we both bought. Never had problems again, but it was definitely disturbing. I hope your other kid is doing well.
