Battery refused to start tractor this year. I bought a new battery and put it in backwards. Wouldn't start. Turned it around hooked it up right , turned the key and there was a screech from the top of the motor..flywheel? Now it will not start , no click when turning the key, nothing. Can anyone offer suggestions?

You may have blown a fuse and/or blown out the starter with the reverse polarity.

Ok where is the fuse as that sounds plausible Thank you for that suggestion! Cabin Fever,

Not sure if this diagram helps. But, there are three wires coming off the solenoid. One goes to the starter, one goes to positive terminal on the battery, and one goes to the key switch. The wire that goes to the key switch has a place for a 20-amp fuse.

Thank you! In this case would the fuse blow and protect the starter? No one of knowledge has looked at it yet... I called the small engine place and was told by my description it sounded like the starter. In all my diagrams there is none to show the starter and the word starter is not mentioned. I am going back out to see if I can find it per your diagram and the shops description of where it is. Thank you again Cabin Fever,

Re-read the description from my previous post for the solenoid wires.
You can easily test your starter with a battery and jumper cables. If your battery is charged and hooked up in the mower, just take a heavy screw driver and touch the two terminals on the solenoid. If the starter turns the engine, the starter is good.
If the battery is not in the mower, use some jumper cables to test the starter by clamping the negative cable to the mower frame, and using the positive cable to touch either the solenoid terminal that leads to the starter or the starter terminal directly.

No single wires , all are 3 wires. They go over and behind the fuel tank to the ignition if there is a fuse it must be on the other side of the fuel tank , between the tank and ignition. In the morning I will try to check it out. I could really hope it could be fixed with the starter. That is where the shop would start, but I know there are many other parts that are electrical!!!

Cabin Fever, I want to thank you again for the time spent answering my question. I have decided this is beyond me and it would be better for a shop to repair. They can check out the whole machine and see if it is a lost cause or worth while to repair. I will try to write an update when and if they repair it. Not surprising they are backed up 4-6 weeks.

This might also help with fuse location

The lawn service was here again today. He services his own equipment as much as possible. He said he would come Monday and pick it up but wants to look at it first. One fuse is under the battery . He is going to start there. Then the starter and other fuses. But he does not under stand why fire did not fly when I started it .
I could hope it is simple and he can repair it easily. But until I regain my health I may allow him to mow. However once the mower is fixed I will mow around the places I do NOT want him to mow or weed eat! So help me all I can do and his help is determined to destroy my garden!!
