Today is the 1st day I opened the split hive in over a week. I'm using the OTS method for the 1st time and so far it's a success. The original queen was moved out to a separate Nuc and is building up nicely again. I will probably transfer them to an 8 frame deep this weekend or next. The original hive made at least 2 nice queen cells on the 3 frames I notched. They even made some of their own queen cells. I made 3 mating nucs with those frames and the remaining resources in the original hive. I stacked those nucs in the spot where the original hive was to allow the foragers to keep working. This weekend or before I will move them to outyards for mating. If I'm successful 1 hive becomes 4 just in time for the main flow in late May/early June. [/a]

Hope your bees do well this year. I worry about the honeybees...

My mother was terrified of bees like most people are of snakes. In our old house they had gotten into the attic and then were making their way into the house. She got stung a few times in our bathroom, in fall if I remember when they are agressive, and that was enough for her.
Now, I take some of my mating nucs to her new house and I've shown her how mellow they can be. Just don't stand straight in front of the hive and they ignore you. She told me this year she wants me to keep a full hive at her house. It will be out of the way and inconvenient but she's my mom and I will do it for her. It"s amazing how much a little education has done to change her attitude.

Today I installed a hive for my mother. She is now a beehaver and is thrilled to have a hive but is not interested all the stuff that goes along with bees. So, every two weeks or so I'll be driving over and doing inspections (and getting dinner too). This is the original queen from the splits. She's my best one.
