I'm getting ready to paint an unfinished wall in my basement and the panel is going to stand out like a sore thumb if I leave it as it is. Any ideas on what I could do here? I was thinking of a building a "box" around it. Sides and bottom, leaving the top open and then adding a door. We'll be adding the ceiling later and I was thinking we could cut the ceiling around the box. I'll cut the door 3/4" short to accommodate the ceiling thickness so that it can still open and close easily. Here's my panel and a picture of something similar to what I want. Of course mine would be a lot bigger and not have the top or the shelves on the outside, but the general idea in case my description is not understandable. Thanks!

I would make the door go all the way to the ceiling, would make it a lot easier if you have to add or change wires later.

My DS's is flush on wall between his kitchen and living room. We hung a nice big Dale JR. poster over it. Goes with his Dale Jr. collection....James

Melissa, It would be all the way to the ceiling, I just need to cut it short now to allow for the ceiling thickness later. Clear as mud, huh? @jwal10, The way I see it is that I'm basically doing the same thing, just with a door instead of Dale Jr. I mean if we were to put walls up it would be flush with just the panel door showing, right?

In some areas it is illegal to cover the box. When firefighters come into the house they need to know where the box is. Not only fire fighters but for other emergencies as well.

It's not illegal or against code for me to cover the box, I just can't put anything in front of it like a piece of furniture. I asked my friendly neighborhood electrician.
