I hived two of my last 4 splits the other night. I managed to get some pictures of the new ladies. I'm always amazed how much different sisters can look.

Which ones are the "sisters" ..... how do you pick them out? When I make a split I create a 3 frame nuc. Usually 1 frame of eggs/brood, 1 frame of stores, and a frame of capped brood. I let the bees make their own queen, so with these 4 splits the eggs came from the same parent hive and were laid by the same queen. That's why the two queens pictured above are sisters. The queen in the top picture is a little harder to spot because she's dark and the picture isn't so great. She's pretty much dead center in the picture all by herself. What does it mean to "hive your splits"?By hiving them I mean moving them out of my 3 frame nuc boxes into a regular hive box. For me those are normally 8 frame deeps but these are going into 5 frame deeps to winter as 5-over-5's. This is the box I make splits with and the two hives bearding out are the ones in the first pictures.
