As a follow-up to our rescue goat, Charlie... I thought some of you might be curious to know how he's doing.
He was castrated on Friday. He wasn't exactly himself that day, but by Saturday seemed to be back to "normal". The incision is healing nicely.
He's gained almost 10 pounds since we've had him. He basically eats all day with his free choice hay, and in the evenings (if we aren't running with other stuff), we take him on a walk to eat off his "salad bar" (weeds, grass and what-not on the property). I'm learning a lot about his eating habits and have noticed that there are a number of things that he just isn't interested in.
We've also noticed that his hair is growing in more and a little thicker. I'm assuming due to the better diet.
While he was passed out on Friday from the castration, I cleaned and trimmed his hooves more. Now they look nice and tidy. Going forward, with regular trimming, I think they'll look quite nice.
He is not only putting weight on the "injured" leg, he's using it lots more. I now believe that he didn't necessarily have an injury but perhaps it was hoof problems. I'm starting to see a little muscle change in that leg. But I think it will take a long time before its fully back to normal.
He was still coughing some and the vet listened to his lungs again. Said that he doesn't think its pneumonia (feels that is now cleared up), but possibly scar tissue from an unknown injury or issue. Since we don't know his history at all, we don't know what could have possibly have happened to him. The vet feels that he may always have that cough but we should keep an eye on it in case it presents with any other issues.
He had no fever, great appetite, good energy and he got spunk so the vet felt he's truly on the mend.
Oh, and he's getting some friends in October. A pair of ND wethers that are 6 months old from a farm about 45 minutes from us. Until then, he has to settle for us humans and the dogs (our coonhound LOVES Charlie).
P.S. I'm loving having a goat!
