The best kind of goat is one you don't have to feed or milk! Just kidding! (get it? kidding!!) I love milking & find it to be the most relaxing of all the chores I have. Goats are so awesome & have great personalities. They can bring a smile to your day no matter how bad it is.

I thought you might be trying to start WWIII! The best kind of goat is.... NUBIAN! Srsly, right now, the best kind of goat is a live, milking doe. Had too many losses this year.

I hear you! I love my Nubians. I have 1 Lamancha & I'm looking at maybe getting a Saanen only because I can't find any Nubians close by. I had terrible losses last year due to mastitis. I miss my best milk does.

Oh, I'm sorry about your losses! This year has been pretty bad for us. We lost one of Nomo's kids at birth (hyperplastic thymus), and then Trub's huge singlet buckling just up and died. No reason at all.
To top it all off, our new ram lamb, Harold, bartered for with the intention of him being flock sire next year, died from bloat overnight this past Monday.
One more doe to kid out, and we're holding our breath.
There must be SOMEONE in IN who has Nubians. Emily Dixon (Ozark jewels) used to live there. She has the loveliest Nubians!
I like Saanens, to a point. They're kind of like sheep: NTB (Not Too Bright).

We have had almost every kind of farm animal but goats until 2 years ago. We bought 2 Nubians to be weed-eaters on our steep hill. They are supposed to love knapweed. They prefer flowers and fruit trees! Lucky for them they are charming and come when called as well as the dogs.

No, DH spent his summers on his uncle's dairy farm as a kid, I had to promise not to breed them! He doesn't want to be tied down to milking. They are just pets, although they are does so maybe someday. The three year old had twins her first time so I think I could still bred her next year, if I'm convincing enough.(insert smilie?)

"The best kind of goat" is the one's each of us have for the job we needed done. I have Boer goats to keep my woods clean, I don't have to milk them, you can have that job Wendy LOL (although I did once when a kid would not nurse),did enough milking cows when a child. I find the boers to be "gentle giants" who would rather eat browse than grass. Fits my needs. Now with the grandchildren here, ones 2 the other is almost three months, I am thinking of getting some dwarf breed for them to play with. Anyone want to make suggestions? So they are all the "best breed" to me.

Yea, that's kind of what we have been thinking. I may have to fence off a new section for them. Don't want the boer girls to pick on the new little ones.

I love my Nigerians - they get the job done for us and I don't mind milking 99% of the time.

Wags, I remember when you schooled me on the wonders of Goats Nigerian. Not that the little guys would be my first choice, because you know me: In for a penny, in for a pound. The bigger the better! But if it comes down to where I can't handle the big gals, I'll be making a road trip to the Great Northwest to get some top notch Nigerians!

If I ever get a couple of goats I figured I would get Nigerians. However, the lady at the feed store told me they have small teats so if you have arthritis in your hands it wouldn't be easy to milk them. I hadn't read anything about that with regard to Nigerians. Is that true? Unfortunately, I have that affliction.

Get good dairy stock, and you'll get good teats.

Ours are Pygora. Had Nubians all my life. These little pygoras work for my love of sheep, my need for milk, fiber for Sweetie and the meat is very good. The little white puffballs are so cute when small, like lambs. The small size is good for a small place and small people. They are nosy and very friendly, we bottle raise the kids. They don't give a lot of milk but it is rich. We don't need a lot but we make all our dairy products from it. I put together a small hand operated milker. We keep 2 in milk all the time, rotating the breeding as needed. Since I used to shear sheep there is no problem there....James

I have two 8 week old bucklings and a 2.5 month old doe. I do not plan on breeding them, though the smaller buckling and the doe would make pretty babies:-) I have wanted to try having goats, this is my first experience with them ever. So far they are delightful little guys that love attention and kisses. I have a small day pen for them, then put them into an enclosed, pretected stall overnight. Hopefully will be expanding the day pen are to about an acre, it right now it is working for my kids. Glad ad to know someone else has had or currently has Pygoras!
