Yeah, I used to think it humorous seeing someone else's pet sporting the "cone of shame". Not anymore! We took in some juvenile cats to "get done" and one of the females ended up licking her incision open. So, off to the vet my DH goes last Friday - they ended up putting glue on her incision to close it and she came home sporting the "cone of shame". Sooo, yesterday AM I check on her and she had somehow untied the gauze that they had used to tie it on her/she had totally got if off and she had opened up the incision once again! Suffice it to say - I was not a happy camper. So off to the vet office we go AGAIN! THIS time - they stapled her incision shut and now we have 9 more days living with the "cone of shame". Once again, they used gauze tied in a ribbon to keep it on her. I asked the tech - "Since we have her crated at the moment - could I instead put a cat collar on her and then attach the cone of shame to that?" She thought that would be a good idea... Well, on the way home we stopped at the dollar store and I purchased a cat collar. Normally, I would NEVER put a collar on a cat - but hey - she's in a crate and it is WORKING! She hasn't managed to get the cone off - Thank God... I also did not know that they pretty much can't eat and drink with the cone on... So, we have to watch her carefully when we take it off - when the little wench gets her fill of food and drink - she tries to start licking it again! I'll be so glad when these 9 days are over... sigh... DH and Blackie... ~Mari

Strangely enough she doesn't look ashamed. She looks tee'd off.
Clever to think of a collar. Hopefully that's the last time she tests your creativity.

We always had to attach the cone to the collars for our dogs. Good luck and hope this time is the charm.

Ah yes, we have a cat that looks just like that but he managed to come home with half a tail a few months back, so he also ended up in a cone, it came with a little cloth collar, (probably because he doesn't have a collar himself) he never got that off BUT he did discover he could use the edge of the cone to scrape the dressing off the tail. As to the eating and drinking, yes the first day he failed miserably but after that he got the hang of it, they just have to learn how to position it and you need to put food and water in something small enough that it can fit inside the collar.

Aww poor kitty. I can't imagine- gluing an incision and her getting it open, and then them having to STAPLE it? Sounds very painful on both fronts but she doesn't look in pain so that's good! I did laugh when you called her a wench Hope she feels and gets better soon! For the record, I've never found the "cone of shame" funny. The animals always looked so sad Except your cat, she looks almost...content in that second picture. Must be the owners!

Doesn't Blackie realize that the longer she messes with the incision, the longer it will take to heal? If we could just make them understand that, things would go much smoother!
Here's to hoping that there are no more set backs and she is back to normal soon!

Aw, you guys are so sweet to take in the kitties and get them spayed/neutered. And nope, Blackie doesn’t look one bit ashamed, but she does look every bit annoyed!!

She looks to smart for her own britches, she appears to be enjoying all the attention and fussing over her, never trust a cat their minds don't work like ours

never trust a cat their minds don't work like ours I think therein lies the attraction for some of us. I literally never know for sure when my cat looks at me if she's thinking "aww what a nice human, I think I'll keep her", or if she's quietly plotting my demise

I was reading an article not to long ago about putting the cone on the pet backwards. It got in the way of getting to the "itchy" area but it didn't interfere with eating and drinking.

Not quite sure of the logistics of that... Well, anyway, the two of us are SO happy that Blackie is back to being a run of the mill out of control juvenile! The "Cone of Shame" has officially been retired I'm so glad to say...
