Here is a picture to ponder. It took me a while to backtrack where the print came from.

Gee, I don't know! I do wish I were better at ID'ing prints... I'm definitely going out on a limb here - it kind of reminds me of my dog's tracks... It couldn't be a wolf could it? Whatever it is - it gives me the willys seeing it in comparison to a man's hand! ETA - Really cool pic by the way! ~Mari

I think a wolf's print has longer toes. Big dog?

My best guess is wolf too. But I've never seen one in person.

Good one!
Ya know, I kind of wondered about that myself while studying your avatar pic... But then again, I had no idea that a domesticated dog could have such a big paw! That's why I went for something out in "the wild".
Your Montana is so beautiful and looks so happy and sweet... ~Mari

I was thinking St. Bernard. They say you can tell how big a puppy will grow up to by looking at their feet. They grow into their feet. Pretty dog.

In her heart Montana IS a wolf! Beautiful dog, and I'm glad the print didn't belong to something that wanted to eat you!

Lol! I didn’t get to answer before you posted the second pic, but my guess going in was a large dog:-)

My lab mix had huge feet and I was just looking at her prints in our fresh snow. Night before last DH heard a crash against the front storm door and some kind of a cat sound. I did see some largish prints without claws that morning. Don't have a clue what it was.

Other cats I don't know but mountain lion is pretty distinctive.

Hard to see, but are you in wolf country? Looks too tall to be a coyote, but maybe a mix? Either way, I wouldn't want to run into it in the dark!

Wind in Her Hair took the photo and it is definitely a timber (gray) wolf. She watched it for several minutes and did not dare move on the porch while she tried to take pictures. She was actually taking the photos from "the hip" without looking thru the view finder or the LED screen. If she had lifted the carmera to her eye, the wolf would have noticed and would be gone.
We've had gray wolves move through the yard on several occasions. They just keep moving so by the time you grab a camera, they are gone.

Yes, I was going to say Grey Wolf, but you eat me to it! Dang, I gotta get on theses threads faster!! Beautiful animals, not sure I would like them moving across my place though since I have so many tasty treats they could imbibe in!

I love when other people have large predators at their places. I'm too chicken to like them at mine. Bear don't scare me too much. Mostly. Mountain lion are more unnerving. I've never seen a bobcat but they're around.
The only animal that really scared me was an elk. It was seriously stalking me to the point I was checking out wolf trees to climb.
