When I lived along the Snake River in Oregon the frost , not icicles , would hang in 6 inch ropes... beautiful!

Once in Michigan, I went riding through miles of ice coated trees. It was spectacular. Until it started melting and large pieces of ice started swacking the horse. He took it well. It's called glaze en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glaze_(ice) I imagine that the colder air is pooling in between the banks so is more likely to stay and allow ice to accumulate.

You can make a small version of those in a freezer in an icecube tray. put the water in hot and 1 in about 20 will make a little spike, it looks a lot like a shark fin!
