I've often heard of cats becoming deaf in old age. Never had one of mine do that. It happened rather quick for my 14-year pal. She was fine when I left for the hospital in February but deaf when I returned 2 months later. One thing is that her meows are much louder than before. She also doesn't stray far when we are outside. Hasn't slowed her mouser instincts any as she caught a chipmunk today. But with only her 4 fangs left for teeth, she sould not get in a fatal bite.

Sorry to hear she went deaf.

This cat did have exceptional hearing. Wood mice can get into the basement and then into the cupboard under the sink. There's no way to get beyond that. If A mouse had gotten that far, Roxie would hear it and sit in front of the cupboard door. That was a signal to refresh the trap or remove a dead mouse from it. In the case of the chipmunk yesterday, it was sight. She had previousky caught other chipmunks, voles, wood mice, and a shrew while outside. She once thought that she caught a rabbit which I had hit with an air rifle and ran off. She ran in the same direction and I found her sitting atop "her" dead rabbit!
When I broke my neck, she knew something was wrong when 2 EMTs came rushing in and began fussing over me. I was sitting on the edge of the sofa and the cat was on the coffee table about a foot from my face. She looked up at one as if to ask what he was doing to her master. He reached down and patter her head. She then looked at the other EMT who did the same. Then all was OK and she sat and watched them put the brace on.

My late husbands cat is picking on me!! She is 15, my daughter says I am her source of amusement. I told her monthsago she was getting a bit flabby-- she sat beside me reached out with her teeth, pulled the skin on my hand up-and released it-i asked her what she was doing--so she did it again! she picks a new spot every day to show me my skin dont fit so well any more either if she gets mad--she walks over and turns my c pap machine on. she must be doing well, she has all of her teeth. nice to see you posting, Martin

Great to see you posting Martin!! I have missed you:-).
I have ever had or known of a deaf cat. Very interesting issue! I would imagine her sense of smell is still intact and leads her to the mouses and chippies (Chipmunks). Either way, I hope she keeps catching them!

Two days ago, friend's 9-year-ols son said that he saw a rat. There are chipmunks here but he was certain that it was a rat. It was! Roxie was outside this aft and I found her holding something down among some flowers. The citter managed to escape but not before I saw that it was a young muskrat. I do have a goldfish pond so that is keeping it here.

If anyone read the title as "Dead Cat", it's true now. The deafness must have been a sign that someting else was going wrong. The past couple months had her going from dry food to canned food and then just licking the liqiuid. Peaked at 16# one time and now just skin and bones. This morning there was some sort of far away look in her eyes as if looking into another world. Burial will be Saturday in the garden that she loved to patrol. After almost 15 years, I am going to miss her a lot.

You know it's coming. Hearing loss, vision loss, arthritis. But, it is still sad. Good call burying her in the garden.

Sorry for your loss paquebot, We are very partial to having cats around here as we live in a woods... and some of them that reside in the house could be considered "child substitutes"... 15 years is a good run for a cat... but also totally solidifies them as being a member of the family... When our 18 year old cat passed away - it was indeed heartbreaking - totally like losing a member of my family... I still often think of him - especially when we are eating anything with tomato sauce - he loved tomato sauce! BTW - not easy typing this with a two month old kitten laying on my chest! My condolences... ~Mari

So sorry for the loss of your cat & friend. We do love our pets! My daughters dog is 14 & has gone deaf about 6 months ago. I can stand right behind him and yell, he doesn't hear me. I finally tried a whistle and he does hear that. Oh, How I love our little guy. I can relate to your sadness. Peace paquebot,

So sorry for the loss of your cat, Martin. Our pets are our family and we grieve for them when they pass. But life wouldn't be worth living without them.

"Funeral" was today while taking a break from cutting venison. If she would have been alive and well, she would have been gorging on her favorite food. We thanked Mother Nature for a warm day to thaw the ground. Son dug the grave and I laid the "coffin" in it. Turned awsy with tears. Hard to see an old friend go.

I am so sorry for the loss of your cat. We have 5 ,two of them are siblings and pure white and both are deaf from birth. The sweetest things ,they are 13. The others are a bit younger ,but not much. They are all rescues. We certainly love our kitties and our dog :)It is so very hard when they cross over the rainbow bridge.

I’m sorry you lost your cat Martin. We’ve had quite a few of those burials here in our yard. Each one is marked with a small wooden cross. It hurts when we lose our animal family. ☹️

This is the first time in probably 35 years that there is no cat in the house. Believe it or not, that takes a little getting used to. Wife says no more cats. A niece breeds Ragdoll-Siamese crosses. I know what my next cat will be!
