We're heading out shortly for the closing on our new property. Finally!
Already have a stock tank and hay ring loaded up in the truck to drop off on our way home.

Just back from the closing! Which went uneventfully -- the only thing in this process that has! I met the seller; she and her husband live nearby and were very nice. The real estate agent used to own the property herself and was really happy to see us get it. She even had little gifts for us at the closing; a shiny new pitchfork for me (it won't be shiny for long) and for Numb,,,, OMG, I laughed so hard! We all hung out chatting after the papers were signed. Then Numb and I went out to the property and poked around a bit, laid out our plans for work for the rest of the week -- clearing brush, painting barn, hopefully bringing the cows home Saturday! We walked the lower paddocks from end to end but couldn't even get through the upper ones -- the weeds were over our heads! Well, winter will take care of that I guess, followed by some strategic brushhogging next spring. We kicked up a couple of rabbits and a groundhog while walking around, and Numb spotted a deer up on the hill. I wanted to tell all the wildlife, "We come in peace!" Numb said we will get the deer a salt lick. It can be their sanctuary, too.

Pony, that statue is so cute! Thanks everybody!
Numb lined a hauler who is gonna move the girls on Saturday. Hoping we can get 'em all in the truck without drama (not likely).
I'm buying paint for the barn tomorrow; Numb is gonna be whacking weeds (I have to work). We brought our old Toyota hay hauler over from the old farm this afternoon. Things are gonna be REAL busy around here for awhile!

Congrats! How exciting! Couldn't have happened to two nicer, more deserving people!
Take pictures as you go so when you feel overwhelmed and like you haven't accomplished anything, you can look back and see how far you've come. And so we nosy people can see what you've been up to!
Enjoy!

Thanks!!! We are working like sled dogs. I am picturing the two of you in heavy Winter gear... Oh gawd no! Hot & humid here!
Well, Numb finished inspecting/repairing the fence today and bolted the hay ring together. He's going to get a round bale tomorrow, then we should be pretty well set for the move on Saturday. I didn't get a chance to do anything today as I left for work at 9:15 and got home around midnight. Tomorrow will be more of the same, but at least I'll be too busy to be stressed about the move!

Don't I know it ... yesterday I got home an hour later, since we had the hoof trimmer to contend with at work, which delayed milking for an hour, then we had 5 cows to breed and found 2 in natural heat. I didn't get home until after 1 a.m., and the hauler changed the time from 10 to 8, which is probably a good thing as it's supposed to be hot today. So it's 6 a.m. and we're getting ready to head out. I'm so tired I can barely see straight! But, well, here we go.

They're home! All safe! Loading went about as well as you'd expect in terms of getting four cows to walk into a step-up trailer. Shady detected the bucket of sweet feed awaiting her and went first (Shady is a good girl). Rozzy kicked me in the knee (Rozzy is a bad girl.) The ride was uneventful with no casualties except the 7 nervous breakdowns I had wondering whether they were all still on their feet? SLOW DOWN, SLOW DOWN! They all walked off the trailer in one piece and proceeded to stroll up the lane, sniffing and nibbling at everything. They checked out the hay shed, the barn and the open area Numb made for them under the big maple. Shady came up and licked my hand as if to say, "Thanks for bringing us to this tasty green place." That's all the thanks I need. Love you girls! We are making a pit stop here at the house for breakfast, coffee and to soak up some air conditioning (it's brutally hot already), then we'll take them the round bale that's already loaded on the Toyota and leave the truck at the farm for Numb to run around in. Then it's back to the old farm to get the cats (if we can find them) and load up some gates and hand tools. Today's my only day off this week, gotta make the most of it!

Well we went back out to the property, and guess what the cows were doing? Why, standing in the barn, of course! I buy them 7 acres to run around on, and ... Numb joked the other day that they'll probably never leave the barn. I wouldn't doubt it! They did follow us down the lane to inspect the new round bale, and Snowy and Lil had plopped themselves in the barnyard for a snooze before we left. Numb put up a fan in the barn for them and we'll take a couple more out tomorrow. It's so miserably hot and humid here today that we decided to wait and go back to the old farm in the cool of the morning. I'll do my weekend housework this afternoon in airconditioned comfort. Numb did most all of the work today as I was kind of wiped out, now he gets to take a bath and relax for the rest of the day. He worked so hard all week to get the place ready for the girls! I don't know what I'd do without him. He made a video of the girls as they came off the truck ... I'll get him to post it later.

Why are you feeding hay this time of year??

Our dairy farmer friend always provides some hay even when they are on pasture... I will have to get more information from him...

Maybe since they are switching to new pasture she wants them to have time to acclimate to it. Her weather is very similar to ours and we have lots of grass still in the pastures.

Yes, they didn't have much grass at the old place so I didn't want them to gorge on it right away. The hay is under a shed roof with a tarp over the backside so it should keep for awhile if they only pick at it. I've been getting TMR from the dairy too although I may discontinue that until cold weather sets in. (They do love their TMR, though!) Looking at the video Numb made of the cows coming off the trailer, I realized ... they are kinda fat. More than kinda, actually!
