What cat litter brand or style would you recommend? My two cats have two boxes, one on first floor and one in the basement. I scoop every day or couple of days, but the house can still smell pretty "catty". I don't like highly-scented litters: stinky cat plus stinky perfume Don't like air-freshener things, either. They bother my nose and eyes. These can't be outdoor cats due to age, traffic, and the number of wild or roaming cats around here. Thanks.

I used Tidy Cat for years. The one with the blue lid was my favorite. Unfortunately cat litter is the newest product to be "scentified", so it smells more than it used to. I think the brand has an unscented version out now, though.
Fresh Step was the best when it came to clumping, but the stench was unbearable.

I have emptied a box into the litter pan if I thought it had been open long enough, or had been in the fridge.

We use Arm & Hammer "Naturals Clumping Litter." Can't compost clay litter (makes an awful, slippery, stinky mess), but this breaks down well. Doesn't smell of perfumes, sifts easily, breaks down quickly, not expensive.

When I lived in the country, I put clay litter WAY out back, but that meant carrying it It stayed there, piled up, for years. Still there as far as I know. Since I live in the village, it may or may not work to compost used litter, but a degradable one, if well-scooped and well-covered? Maybe.

There is also newspaper litter. It is recycled newspaper in little pellets. I used to put baking soda on the bottom of the litter pan.

Wood pellets are. my favorite , the only kind this cat would use if he cannot go outside. They have no odor. The pellets swell with liquid and the poor dries. It is cheaper than most. Very easy to clean . Or compost.

Very easy to clean . Or compost. And burnable in a woodstove. I do that daily. No fuss once a week I pour the tray into a cardboard box and light it up. 10bucks for six months one cat!
