This AM as I was opening one of the coops I happened to look over to where they have been dustbathing in a covered area. They have gotten down quite far - and this was laying there on top. Just wondering if anyone here knows what it is? I wonder if it is going to be one of those obvious ones and I should have known it... Oh well... Pics... Thanks in advance! ~Mari

I am no expert, but it actually looks more like partial pelvic bone to me.

Looks pretty cool/wicked as a "skull" though - HA! Obviously I have never taken any anatomy classes... That would be a neat thing to do in my spare time this winter though... ~Mari ETA - I'll definitely add this one to my list of "Blonde Moments"!

My experience comes from composting dead animals and finding the bones later as well as butchering. Ive never paid close attention, but if you see enough a little bit sticks with you.

Yep! That is what it appears to be. Interesting description in the above link... " Because of their unusual and intriguing structure, chicken pelvises were sometimes referred to as miniature dragon skulls."Now I'm thinking I know how it got there. Since anyone (chickens-that is) who passes away here - they get buried down in the woods. A few weeks ago though, I took a bunch of chicken/turkey bones and scraps out of the freezer and boiled them all down and canned the broth. Then, we placed the leftover bones, etc., near the other side of the property for the cats and whatnot to work on. I'm thinking since I found it on top of the dirt that one of our cats took it out there. I do have a couple of cats that are hanging out there quite regularly since the sparrows are starting to go in the coops. Oh well, I learned something today - and perhaps I gave some of the members here a good laugh not knowing the difference between a skull and a chicken pelvis! ~Mari

Mari-in-IN, I don't think it is so weird or laughable that you didn't know. I've taken children, chicken off the bone for ages, and I didn't know.

Free chicken feed. I know it sounds odd, but chicken has everything a chicken needs to grow and lay.

Not dissing the people who do it - just kinda weirds me out thinking about it... I also do not give them cooked eggs as well... Same premise... But, I do indeed live by the mantra -- "to each his own"... ~Mari

If you've never really dealt with bones on a regular basis, or studied them, how would you know?

If you've never really dealt with bones on a regular basis, or studied them, how would you know? I guess you don't - but I really went all out as far as taking pics at every freakin' angle of a chicken's pelvis - did I not?!?! Oh my - I'm stifling my laughter as to not wake my husband up!!!!
