My first post on my new favorite site. Felt good today to finally get some dirt under my finger nails. I planted 40 new strawberry plants. I planted a new plant from Gurneys called Gurneys Whopper. Supposed to produce large flavorful fruits. Will have to wait a year to see

Planting my new strawberries tomorrow. The grandkids pulled all the weeds out to help me. They have been finding earthworms and putting them in the strawberry beds. I told them that the kale could use them as well. They dumped the entire cup in the strawberry bed. Kale does not rank as high as strawberries!

Hmm, strawberries versus kale, well, that's a tough choice for kids? Ha! Husbands do the same! We're moving to a new house so the garden has to be relocated as well. There's two types of strawberries out there, one with big berries only occasionally and one that has itsy bitsy teeny ones frequently. Of course they look alike. Now that the one is making big strawberries, I'll know which one to relocate.

I had to replenish my old strawberry bed after a lot of winterkill. Most were June-bearers which can be a problem without protection. Replaced them with the old standby Ozark Beauty which we can enjoy yet this year. Never have lost one of them over the years. Trouble only began when I decided to try just about everything that the local Jung's store had. Full circle now with 31 Ozark Beauties planted last week.

I also had a lot of winterkill. Lost probably 50% of my plants here.

Winterkill here comes when we have a lot of snow and then rain. It freezes to white ice and the plants smother. That's why straw is used. It creates enough air pockets so that the dormant plants can still breathe. When it happens two winters in a row, it's frustrating. Me here with a nice strawberry bed and a freezer loaded with pick-ur-own!

I had just transplanted my strawberries into a new bed last fall. It doesn't look like any survived. I didn't realize that June bearers were less hardy. I switched to everbearers to not have to thin out the bed so often. I've reordered and am waiting for them to come in. I think it's still too early to plant here. All I've gotten done is moving some compost from the barn yard to some of the raised beds.

Just think of the name, strawberry. They've been mulched for centuries with straw and need it to survive in cold climates. I was in a pick-your-own field last June and it was right after a couple days of heavy rain. Picked two flats without getting my shoes dirty. That field must have had at least 6" of straw last fall. It was blown on as there were no "biscuits" or any other sign of having come straight from a bale. I used to rely on shredded leaves but doesn't create the air pockets which insulate against the cold. Don't know what the limit is for depth when using straw but probably wouldn't be afraid to use 6" of fluffy stuff.

I know this thread is old, but how did you decide the location of your strawberry beds. Any preferred areas; wide open, shade, along fences...

amylou, I garden in raised beds 3 by 12 ft beds, and 12 inches high.I always rotate my vegetable planting from one bed to another the next year. I just picked one and said this is the new strawberry bed.

I'll add that full sun is best. Originally I had a 3-tier pyramid that produced well for years with full morning sun and partial afternoon sun. Neighbor built a tall double garage and blocked the morning sun. Production and growth went downhill immediately. Moved the bed to full sun and got more than I ever had in the previous location. (No longer a pyramid as I only kept the lower ring.) First Ozark Beauty berries ripening right now. Can't believe how sweet they are.
