My son has been looking/calling all over in an attempt to locate a HARDWOOD "wooden" wheel with 6" diameter and 1" thick (with hole in middle for attaching). He is wanting to add a leather strap to it and improve his ability to sharpen our knives. He has not been able to find any type of "wooden" wheel at all.
Does anyone in here know where I might get one? If it needs to be made, is there anyone who can make it. David is certainly willing to pay. He needs two of them.
Thanks.

I'll make no assumptions about his knife making knowledge, so I'll just say, be aware that a bench grinder can heat the blade up really fast. Enough to ruin the temper.

He likely won't find a "wooden wheel" that size, but he my be able to find a lawn mower wheel that he can attach the leather to. Just a thought.
He may have to "sand" the tread off the mower wheel to get it flat, but that shouldn't be too difficult.

The more I think about this the more I doubt that it is a good idea.
1. no matter what "wheel" he puts on the rpm's might make it come apart at speed and that isn't good. 2. no wooden wheel will be rated for the rpms or even lawn mower wheel for that matter.

He is talking of getting a "corner" fencing post as they are very thick in diameter and cutting off part of the end to get this wheel started. All will be experimental but so far he has not found anyone in this area that either sells such a wheel or can make one. (The lumber yards here only make square "carpentry" studs or planks.)

I'd be tempted to use a standard grinding wheels and some Gorilla Glue. I'd wrap the leather on the wheel, with the joint beveled, lapped, and glued. Do the lap bevels so the rotation of the wheel, and contact with the knife doesn't unwrap it.
Then I'd stand back a few feet when turning it on.
There are several less exotic ways of getting a fine edge on knives. For really dull knives I use a belt sander with extremely fine grit, then finish them off with a fine diamond stone.
