For those of you in colder zones where snow and ice occur and yet you grow some foods through the Fall, Winter, early Spring -- can you share your top 5 or 6 foods to grow?
We are in zone 5b. I've never done much winter weather growing, but it's time to expand my skill set. Each year I put in garlic for Spring harvest. We have a new raised bed and I'll be growing beets for the first time.
What are your top 5-6 picks to grow when the weather gets cold?

Things that did well after most of our gardens are done. Brussel sprouts, collards, so kale should be good too. Start them in spring or summer so the cooler weather sweetens them. Lettuces would be good, under a cold frame. I had a few volunteer tomatoes do well under the cold frame into november. You can leave onions (the bulbing type) under a cold frame in winter and they throw up a scape to make the flower, then you get seeds in the second year in the fall.

Kale, spinach, mache, swiss chard, collards, rutabagas, broccoli, beets, lettuce, garlic and leeks. Some only last into fall and some need protection, but might last till spring if the winter isn't too severe. I have had the best results with mache, lettuce, spinach, swiss chard and collards.
