I am making yo yo's using material scraps and intend on making a purse with them. When I was in my late teens I made one and got many compliments and offers to buy it . I refused all the offers but my Mom demanded I sell it to a friend of hers and because of that demand I didn't make any more until a few years ago when I needed something to keep me busy while the fella who was living with me was in hospital or having Dr visits .. When he moved out I put away my busy work until this winter when I needed something to do when I wasn't able to be mobile and had to spend more time in my chair than I really wanted to . I gathered up all the material scraps I had and made yo yo's until I ran out of material .. A couple of members of my online craft/chat board sent more scraps and I made more yo yo's until I have what is pictured now ..Another member just sent a small box of scraps in colors and prints I didn't have ... I have the base of the purse designed in my mind but haven't made the pattern yet .. I am still working on yo yo's in some solids and prints so that I have a variety that looks pleasing to me .. Making the yo yo's will now be an evening "keep my hands busy" project while my gardening and yard work take 1st place on my to do list ...

A yo-yo question: when people made quilts of these, did they sew them on fabric? I was kind of thinking dresser scarf myself. Or maybe just a border with them. This would be a good TV watching project.

I was taught by a woman I worked with at a nursing home while in high school so I guess about 40 years ago or so . She was making a king sized spread and was sewing hers into HUGE squares( they would hang off her lap as she was piecing those together ) until she got it sized right . She said she didn't intend on sewing it to a backing ..only lay it over different colored sheets so as to "change" out the colors once in a while .. When I saw it last it was a full size and had won 1st place in the Indiana State Fair just as it was ..but it was still a work in progress and she was still going to make it a king size bed spread .
I have also seen one by another woman here (maybe 25 years ago) who added cotton to the centers of yo yo's to make them puffed .With those you had to close the center . She made a baby quilt with hers for her first grand daughter and ended up having to make NINE more over the years for more grand babies !
To be honest once you get the circles cut out the sewing is easy and for me goes pretty fast all in all . I am a little OCD about color combos so I take more time matching the ones I sew together than the actual sewing right now..

Pinterest has so many ideas for yo yo's. I have hundreds of yo yo's, of all different sizes made, just sitting in a bag. Probably got 500 or more cut waiting to be sewn. Too many projects, so little time. I can't seem to sit down long enough to do them.

I have pictures I took last evening to show how I make a yo yo and sew together ..
I hope that it doesn't cause problems for those on dial up ..
The process starts with the full circle with the edge turned down and is in order as you go up ...

Aftermidnight, Thanks for the tutorial and the youtube links! I will have to try making some yo yos when I get a little farther down on my to do list (or when it gets darker too early for me to work outside).

That idea sounds awesome ..
My Mom sent over some small yoyo's she had made and found in Christmas material that I think I will turn into garland and maybe use on a wreath for my door ...

I saw the cutest idea for using yo yos....they attached them to jute rope and put them around the Christmas tree.... I saw that same thing, just too late for this year. Now that I have found this thread I can do it for next year! I've heard of yo-yo's but had no clue how to make them. Now I'm rather ashamed of myself for not figuring it out, lol. I LOVE a homespun tree....so it will be a perfect thing to work on now for next year

I used some of mine to make mini Christmas trees. I used mini wooden spools for the bases and tin stars for the toppers. For the center trunk/stem I used birch branches.
