We attended a conference a couple of months ago and learned about a POD that you can set up that feeds chickens the grubs of black soldier flies. Has anyone done this? Here is a link to a video that explains it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6kxKpNrKa0Wish I could figure out how to embed a video. Elkhound is the master at that.

My chickens were free range and ate bugs and fresh greens with corn and wheat for a supplement. In the winter, though, I only fed them corn, oats, sunflower seeds, and wheat. Grubs/maggots/worms would have been great for them. If I still had chickens I would definitely set up some kind of bug farm.

I have raised soldier fly larva for years---without the high dollar pods----You really only need a pod or something homemade similiar if you want to catch and save them----I just put containers in my chicken pens----when they decide to crawl out----the chicken will be there to gather them----themself---LOL.

How do you keep the chickens out of the containers? I'd put hardware cloth around them, or put them on a high shelf

Great ideas. The lid. Does it not sour and smell really bad?? Or.....do you have holes drilled in the sides? How do the grubs crawl out of the top with a lid on it?

Do an image search for "soldier fly pods" and you can see some different designs and how they lead the larvae up and out without allowing the birds access. Most use a ramp with an overhanging lid

The lid has holes drilled in it so the soldier fly can get in to lay their eggs on the attached pieces at the top inside-----also a raised cover over the holes to keep the rain out. Holes drilled clost to the top for the larva to get out. Yea google raising soldier fly larva-----you will find LOTS of info.
