Hi all,
So I am new to the whole knit/crochet scene. I recently learned how to make hats on one of those round looms and was enchanted to find tons of YouTube videos on making teddies and dollies and all sorts of fun things. But I ended up buying some yarn that reviews state needs to be washed or have the colors set BEFORE use.
How does one go about washing a whole skein of yarn?
Thank you!
Rebecca

If it is a natural fiber like wool, you can wrap the yarn around and around two chair backs (chairs sitting side by side)and tie it off in at least four places. This will keep the yarn from becoming a huge "yarn barf". Then soak it in warm water and a little shampoo and hair conditioner for at least twenty minutes. I use the shampoo bottle to sink the skein and push it around. You can also squish it but you don't want to actually agitate it or it will felt. Just try not to dislodge any of the ties. Drain out the water, fill the basin with clear warm water and soak another twenty minutes, add a glug of vinegar to strip out the residual detergent. Squeeze excess water out, then wrap it in a towel and stomp on it. Hang to dry.
If it is acrylic yarn, stuff it in a tube sock, tie the end of the sock, toss it into a load of laundry, then the dryer.
