Stupice, Amish Paste, Siletz, Amber, and Black Cherry. With summers that don't get very hot, we are always on the lookout for short season favorites.

My personal favorite is whatever one may be in my hand at the moment. Tonight it was a nameless little plum type which came from Aldi in a plastic clamshell. It went well with a Romaine lettuce from HyVee and grated Colby-Jack cheese and Catalina dressing. Of course, any other tomato would have served just as well.
Every year I do find a favorite but not always the same type. Kardinal was a favorite one year as was Tsar Kolokol in another. African Queen was another. Some years are hard to pick one when there are so many good ones. Church and Dester were good ones last year but Osmala was better. If I want 15-20 pounds of fruit per plant, it would be De Barao Zolotoy but it would be yellow. Campbell 135 is one of the best for filling jars. For crushed whole tomatoes, Shumway's Sensation was perfect. For a cherry, Tomadose des Comores was one of the best red ones that I've ever grown. For a combination paste/salad/sauce, it would be my own Paquebot Roma. And if I were ever stranded on an island and had a choice of just one tomato to grow, Wisconsin 55 would be it.

WOW Thanks Paquebot, now I have more tomatoes to research. It is just something about tomatoes that interest the heck out of me, every other vegetable I find a good one and I am satisfied with it.I agree it is hard to find the perfect tomato, for taste, productivity , and disease resistance and all, but it is really fun looking.

Martin I'm with you on the Wis 55, that's one good tomato! I've been growing it for a few years here, unfortunately it was one of the varieties that got frosted a few weeks back. I grew the San Marzano Redorta a few years back, they grew out to be 7"- 8" long, like a bulls horn. Last year I grew a different variety of San Marzano...not sure which strain but those were tiny, maybe half the size of your Roma. Hopefully, this year I will wind up with one that's in between! Redorta was a good tomato but not very productive as I remember, the major turn off on that strain was the heavy green shoulders.

Dester Teacher Romanian Cow's Tit Brandywine from Croatia (thanks to Martin for those 1st four) Mule Team Yellow Brandywine Coyote Fireworks Oplaka Indigo Rose ( 1 plant from my sister) I, unfortunately had not been able to have a garden for the last 3 years. I have a lot of heirloom tomato seeds but some of the seed is older. I don't know where my head was when I planted as I should have soaked the older seeds for a bit before I planted them but I forgot. My germination was spotty but all but the Black Plum I planted did eventually come up. I didn't get 100% germination but still have more plants then I need.

A lot of you save seeds, will tomatoes not cross breed, or how do you avoid cross breeding?.

i usually save my seeds in the fall when most of the bees are gone, some gardeners bag blossoms, but I have never done it.I might do it this year, not quite sure how it's done, maybe someone else can help us there.Maybe some pantyhose?

I've been growing pretty-much the same strain of tomatos since I got seeds from my step-dad's grandma back in the late '70s; she brought the seeds from Sicily in the '20s. They are basically a determinate plum-type tomato, and have been very consistent producers for me. Since I also grow other tomatos, I'm sure other genes have crossed-in at some point, but I can't tell any difference.
Towards the end of the season, I select the 3-4 "best" plants: best yields, fewest problems, etc. Most of the seed I save will come from these. Over time, this seems to lead to a locally-adapted variety (a "landrace"). Yields have gone up over the years I've been growing this variety in this location.
OH! This year's list is about like most years. Grandma's tomatos, Super Sweet 100 (for snacking and drying), and Mortgage Lifter I think (for sandwiches etc).
