I intervene at day 12. Get a warm, wet washcloth and try to dissolve the gunk. Then carefully pull the eyelid open. You may need to repeat for several days.
I've got 3 crusty eyes on my latest litter. I've done the above multiple times and it isn't staying this time. I need to do something else at this point. I have used Terramycin ointment before, but I'm having trouble finding it locally.
What are people's thoughts on the health/genetic components of gunky eyes? I'm hoping to keep a doe out of the litter to replace an older doe. I'm thinking "Crusty" should become dinner though.

Ok, DW rubbed some warm water on him a couple days ago, and I was thinking maybe it was too early, she did not want to try to open it though, we will continue with that, this one will likely be dinner as well but I would hate for him to only have 1 eye until he's old enough. Thanks katievt.

FYI - you can use ordinary triple antibiotic ointment on their eyes - it works just fine and is readily available/much less expensive than those little tubes of eye ointment.

Ok, I have been doing the warm water soft cloth compress type deal, trying to peel open the eyelid, and using neosporin, I check on him sometimes and hes trying to open it, sometimes it looks like its over halfway open. I checked him this morning and it was back to where it was so I treated again, if I do this for several more days and it doesn't fix it, what do I do? Forgot to add these are meat rabbits.

Just an update, condition appears to be improving, it was nearly all the way opened this morning and the eyelid swelling is going down.

Good - sometimes it takes a few days to start looking better. In the long run, if it's a meat rabbit, I'd end up just growing it out and butchering it. Just in case it's some kind of genetic issue, I wouldn't raise it out for a breeder.
