It's a little late for this year, especially considering the heat, but I would appreciate hints about when to pick my strawberries. I've been trying to get them right when they're ripe, leaving the ones with pale shoulders or tips till the next picking. That's been twice a day the last few. But I notice that if I leave a box in the fridge till the next day, the berries seem a good bit darker than when I picked them. They taste OK. Any ideas? Thanks.

I don't know what is best. We pick them all fully ripe, which caused problems because the chipmunks and birds liked them as much as us. So we put the bird netting on, which doubled what we could get. We pick them fully ripe then rinse (vin/water, cored) and they go in containers in the freezer for smoothies or sauces, or we eat them out of hand. They are currently ever bearing so we get less but we get them all summer, they are small and sweet.
We also have large rat traps set up because of the chipmunks and this morning all 5 were set off. 3 had animals. 2 chipmunks, 1 mouse. UGH I hate that, dead animals, but what are we to do? I wish I hadn't seen it.

feather, it was just too miserable this morning, but I picked two quarts a couple hours ago. Some clearly went to overripe since I cleared yesterday. They aren't mushy, just quite dark, and not as tasty, so I'm freezing those separately to use in smoothies.
