I posted this from the silent summer thread: "Our two new kittens, about 7 mos old now, discovered one last week. They wanted to "hunt" it but every time it buzzed, they nearly jumped out of their skins. So funny."
Very early Wednesday morning when it was light enough I could tell the soaker hoses from a black snake, I was picking purple hull peas. All was quiet and serene at that hour until Dubba, the orange and white kitten, approached me through the knee high vines from astern and on the starboard side. I almost jumped out of my skin. I'm not sure Dubba thought seeing his human jump and squeak was that funny but it only goes to prove that he who laughs last, laughs best. Both kittens will follow me through the garden and around the yard after I leave the barn but it's not that common for them to show up out of nowhere.

That's so cute! Revenge of the kittens for the cicada story - which was also very cute!
At our previous house, our neighbor's dog inadvertantly scared the heck out of me one night. We had a deck that was only one step off the ground, not the elevated second story wrap one we have here. Dh and I were sitting on the deck after dark. All of the sudden, something large raced up the deck toward me. Now, let me say right here that I'd been finding coyote "evidence" in the yard at that time, including some gross stuff. So where did my mind go immediately? Coyote on the deck. I let out a yelp, and as the beast on the deck took off at a fast run, I saw it was Thor, our neighbor's boxer. He'd come over to visit, as he often did. Dh got a laugh out of that one: "You just scared the heck out of poor Thor!"
So yeah - I definitely get the "almost jumped out of my skin" part!

This morning when I was portioning out some hay from a big round bale for the goats, I dislodged a garter snake. I don't know if Loki saw, heard or smelled it but he sure tried to find it. Tore all through the loose hay, jumped on top of the bale and attacked odd bits. I don't know if they are hunting yet but I haven't seen any mice in the barn in quite a while.
