Not talking a fireplace insert here, but sliding a regular woodstove into a fireplace opening. What do you do to close off the regular fireplace chimney? How far up to extend a chimney flue pipe? I'm thinking of giving a woodstove to my neighbor who has just a fireplace and they try to heat their house with every year. I've bid on a woodstove that is the right size with a top opening that ought to work IF it's feasible? Anyone done this?

They do it all the time in the UK, so I'm sure it's doable. I would think you would want to run the pipe all the way up the chimney.

Our son and dil put one in their fireplace when they lived near Dallas. They had a great draw and they just had to run one section of stove pipe into the chimney.

thanks for the replies! As it turns out, I didn't win the bid in the auction, but I'll keep looking for one.
