I needed something from Ace today and always check the canning section. I was shocked to see boxes of wide mouth lids & rings. Limit was 2 so I bought 2. I did not need the rings but just in case I see no flats. What I really need is reg lids but I have acquired quite a few. Maybe we'll start to see more...I will be stocking up!!!

I checked at an ACE Hardware and a WalMart today. Neither had lids/rings, just the plastic ones. Both stores had a few cases of jars and DH insisted that we buy the one case of WM pints on display.

I ,too, bought some pints & 2 doz of the 4 oz size. I give away lots & use the 4 oz ones for mustard & jam. I am going to town tomorrow and going to check a couple more Ace. I have nieces that can cases of pickles so I can always give any extras to them.

They do seem to be slowly showing up. Wal Mart and Ace are two of the stores the company is try to get supply to....there were 5 stores on the list...I think Kroger's and Target were on the list, too. Mostly what I'm seeing people spot are jars....lids are still a "pink elephant".

WalMart was the only place around here who had a steady supply but not many. They would get in a single case of Mainstay and gone within several days. Ball and Kerr were no-shows for much of the canning season. Kroger had decent stock of Ball early on but that dried up.
Don't be surprised if we begin hearing of more people using used lids. That was virtually impossible with the old latex lids. Now it is a plastisol compound. It does not degrade like latex.

Our WalMart has widemouth flats for first time since canning season began. I started out in good shape with plenty of all 3 sizes; widemouth, regular, and #63. Peas and most snap beans went into 2# Queenline honey jars with #63 lids. Wife works at Pick 'n Save and brought home 6 boxes of regular flats as soon as there was an inkling of potential shortage. At the peak of canning season and no stores with anything, gardening friend had 23 widmouth flats but no jars. I gave her 12 pints and 11 quarts so she could salvage several bushels of tomatoes. Threw in a box of regular for good measure.

I'm trying to find canning jar lids. They are not to be found locally. When looking on Amazon, I am confused. What does split type lids mean? I'm wanting to can broth.

Still nothing available around here - or at the online sites for the store chains. I figure if I keep checking, one of these times I might strike gold find canning jar lids. Right now I have about half of what I'd need for next canning season, due to finding them by chance earlier this year. I'll keep looking. I'm kind of enjoying the treasure hunt at this point.

Split type means two-piece, rings and flats vs one-piece pop-up caps. Best I saw on ther was 48 regular flats for $13.99 with free shipping over $25. That would require ordering 96 for $27.98. Still over 29ยข each. Far cry from Mainsta's $1.47 for a dozen. Martin

I went to town today and stopped by ACE. Their limit sign is gone. I bought 4 boxes of flat reg lids. I need to count what I have. I want to have enough in the stash for a couple years...just in case.
