This gross brown caterpillar kind of bug is on the wall of my house. It's as big as my little finger (or as a house key), about half an inch in diameter at the big end. It has like orange fake-eyes on the big end, but I suspect that is just camouflage and the real eyes are on the other end. Looks like it will grow up to be a butterfly, but I couldn't tell you which kind.

It seems to be a Western Tiger Swallowtail butterfly in the making. So I am glad I did not smoosh it...
