Left home at 0430 headed to the cabin at Wallowa Lake for spring bear hunt. Just got in and unloaded. Will go scout this afternoon. Rest of group will be in tomorrow. Good trip over, 4 stops, The Dalles, Hermiston, LaGrande for gas and Enterprise for a few supplies. Checked the spring box, started a fire to get the dampness out and make lunch. About 26 miles to hunting area. Already saw 6 bears on the way in. We hunt SE of Imnaha, overlooking the Snake River and Idaho border....James

Got out and did some scouting on Monday afternoon. Saw 3 big boars, one a nice blonde. Bigger than the one I got a few years ago. Lots of bear around. Went out yesterday and did a lot of glassing, saw a few (8-10) all a long way off. 2 of the guys made 2 sweeps out and back, I saw 2 moving toward my stand, still a long way off. I walked 2 miles or so, easy flat areas down to the creeks. Have to take it easy the first few days. My ankle hurt like the dickens last night. Today I am wearing a pair of hiking boots with the laces tied in a heel lock. Seems better and much lighter than the Whites logger boots I normally wear for good ankle support. I have seen the big blonde boar twice today but on the next hillside, going up. He is moving a lot. So much different than fall hunt where they stay in the berry patches. They keep their heads up, sniffing the air and move almost continuously. It is cloudy today, some morning fog and a little windy. Big herd of elk passed an hour ago, right below me. 60 head with several huge bulls. Lots of elk. Had a mountain lion on the road right below me, stayed on the road for a good 1/2 mile then dropped off to the creek, I saw it again across the creek an hour later. Any way, been a good trip so far. I went back to the cabin yesterday about 12:30 and made applesauce, had pancakes and hot applesauce this morning. The rest of the guys came in about 3:00, 5 of us went fishing at the lake, took the boat out, got a good batch of Kokanee for supper with salad and orange rice. This afternoon when I come back I am going to set up one ridge south, see if the big blonde comes back to his sleeping area....James

Beautiful country, and steep. I was in Enterprise last year for two weeks fighting wildfires. Spent most the time near Hells Canyon. I didn't see bear but did see lots of elk and deer. Good luck, how do you hunt bear in that country, dogs, bait?

No dogs, no bait here in Oregon. We can use calls but that works better after the elk have calved. We glass south facing hill sides. Bears come out more in cooler weather, into clear cuts and meadows. You see them when they move. You find where the bear is and move in on them staying down wind. Bears have a very good sense of smell. I am on to the cinnamon bear. just have to be at the right place at the right time. The weather is perfect right now....James

Back home, no bear for me. I did get 1 shot in. Missed so Nephew took him, he had the position, moving right toward him, away from me, a little too much brush. 6 people in the group, 3 bears. I will get a chunk for chili, anyway. Miserable last 2 days, came home early, got a really BAD case of poison oak out of the deal. First spring hunt for me, a lot different than what I am used to in the fall. The bears move a LOT. Fall hunt, more set up and wait for them to come out into the berry patches. The bears are very hungry now and cover a lot of ground to find something, not good for me. Not mobile enough. I was using Grandpa's old .45-90 Winchester....James
