I've had it with the news. Like most of you I've been following the Ukraine invasion. This morning it hit me on how jaded we have become as a society to war and its suffering. I was watching Fox and the reporter was typical. An hour earlier he probably ate breakfast, had a warm shower, chose a suit and tie and went off to work. Now here's the part that upsets me, he then points out on a map the latest developments like it was some weather report. Drawing lines and making circles around bridges, airports and towns like a football coach explaining a play to the team. It just hit me on how perverse this has become. I've watched pretty ladies, every hair in place do much the same thing, explain and spin a war with the same amount of detachment. A war so far they or family members probably will never have to suffer the consequences of. Unless it's to profit. I think the Hunger Games are here. The devil must be laughing.

I've seen it reported on that way but I've also seen real compassion. And worry. I watch because I'm worried. Putin isn't going to stop with Ukraine, and we will get pulled into this. I'm praying for the miracle that we need to stop this monster.
In the mean time, I will keep watching and trying to educate myself on what is going on over there.

Honestly, at this point, I only believe about 50% of what I see and NONE of what I hear.

I'm an old lady, okay?
The only time I can remember a journalist show true emotion was Walter Cronkite on November 22, 1963, but there have been so many incidents when it would be appropriate.
On the other hand, do we expect them to report wearing sack cloth and ashes?

And after the Tet Offensive, ol' Uncle Walter lied through his teeth.

WOW! I just looked up Bryce Mitchell and he's from the area where DH and I lived in the early 90's. His wikipedia page says he has a degree from Harding University in Searcy, AR. HU is a private institution affiliated with the Church of Christ and it's a tough school. SO if you listen to that Tucker Carlson interview, don't let that young man's speech fool you. He's one smart cookie.

I called my buddy in Fountain Hill. He knew all about him. He has hero status down there. But so is my buddy and his brothers. Amazing guys. Makes me want to move to AR but it's too dang hot. 14 today, -5 or more with the windchill out here in the bog. If it would stay like that year round it would be almost perfect.

Whether you like social media or not I think it has changed a lot in the news world. People are speaking for themselves. We can watch events unfold live without having anyone interpret it for us.
I like our little local newspaper but I rarely read anything new in it. Most of it has already been on facebook for days before it gets reported. I think they read it on our facebook pages then put it in the paper. I run a group for our community and the news is instant.

Bowdonkey, that's one reason why we're in MO although it can get pretty warm here too. One of the years we were there, we had 330 frost free days. UGH. The year we moved here, AR looked like midsummer and the farther north we got, the less summery it looked until when we arrived, the trees were still bare, the grass brown. The following week, we had a 6" snow. I hadn't seen that in a while! Having complained about the heat, I also don't appreciate too much cold for too long a time. One of the few things my mother and I agreed about was her philosophy that you can put on enough to stay warm but you can't take off enough to stay cool. Of course, she never lived anywhere farther north than Arkansas so might have changed her tune had she been in MN, ND or other points north.

The carnage of war is now a spectator sport. I think a normal reaction ( maybe I'm old fashioned in some ways ) would be horror at its brutality and destruction. But if those news anchors are any kind of bellwether ( I'm not sure if that's the proper term) we as a society have become as detached to violence as those kids that play violent video games we like to complain about. Technology has made it possible to see it first hand without actually being there. A warped reality in my book. I mean, you miss so much without the senses being totally immersed in the actual event. So I'm tuning it out. I'm afraid it will turn me into some kind of zombie. But if they figure out a way to bring not just the sight of war, but also the smells and unfiltered sound, maybe I'll tune in again. Remember folks the eye is the window to the soul.

Www.elenafilatova.com , Ukrainian lady who really makes alot of sense. In 2014 she covered Dombas, now this. She lives about 10 miles from Kiev. Survival is half planning, half luck. Not for the squeamish.
