Tonight, at dusk, I had one chicken left to go in but she kept scratching at the dirt in the yard. I then saw the ground move up and down under her scratching feet. I kept moving her away so I could see what it was (maybe a head pop up) and so it didn't bite or steal her. Dh took a stick n stuck it in the ground scaring it away, so I have no idea what it was. Any thoughts of what it was?

It could be a weasel.

Could it be a mole? We have them here & the holes and tunnels they make underneath the ground sure look like they’re good little diggers.

We are going to trap it. It is a slight possibility it is a mole. I can't find any tracks, but will keep checking to help identify it.

When he pulled back the dirt, there was a second identical hole maybe 8-10 inches away, under the dirt about 3-6 inches. Maybe a rat?

Ah, that sounds more like a muskrat.

RECIPE ….
Fried Swamp Rabbit … (Muskrat)
Wash meat and soak in salted water for one hour. rinse and dry meat. Beat some eggs, add S&P. Dip meat in eggs and roll in flour. Place in greased pan and brown. After browning, fry slowly for one hour. Make a milk gravey and pour over meat before serving.
According to the recipe’s aurthur: This is some of the best wild meat ever eaten. The meat is fine grained with very good flavor. In England there is a place that offers this on its menu …. And you must wait in line!
